    Folks,

    What is this coin?

I suspect it is Chinese. Anyone recognize it? Any estimate on its value?

    Thanks,

    Scott

It is a souvenir of the "Year of the Rabbit" but not for the year 2011.

The two Chinese characters to the left of the rabbit identify the year as 1987 and the design is based on the official "Year of the Rabbit" stamp issued that year.

Since there is no denomination and because it was issued by a stamp company, it should probably be considered a medal as opposed to a "coin".

The Chinese inscription below the rabbit translates as "Shanghai Stamp Company" so this must have been a souvenir medal issued by this company. As far as I can tell, many companies in China issued commemorative medals based on the official design.

The reverse side displays the "Ten Heavenly Stems" and the "Twelve Earthly Branches" which is the traditional Chinese calendar system. In the middle are images of the God of Longevity and a deer.

I did a quick search but was not able to find an exact match so I have no idea as to its worth.

However, this medal, which is 45 mm in diameter, was also issued by the Shanghai Stamp Company in the same year and is almost identical.
