Coin World by Paul Gilkes February 8, 2012 The U.S. Mint plans to offer a special collector set to mark 2012’s 75th anniversary of the current San Francisco Mint facility, though Mint officials have not determined what items the set will contain. Mint officials recently sought comments through a survey completed by Mint customers, asking the customers what they would like to see in a special two-coin set. The survey question did not mention the San Francisco Mint’s anniversary as the theme for a possible collectors set. The survey suggested the possibility that a two-coin set could be issued containing silver American Eagles struck at the San Francisco Mint with the S Mint mark. The survey suggested an Uncirculated version, regular Proof version and Reverse Proof version as being among possibilities for coins that could be included in such a set. In the survey, U.S. Mint officials also sought to gauge the level of collector demand for the set, asking questions about appropriate mintage and household order limits. Story
I think, as an anniversary set it would be cool to see the mint re-strike 2 of the more sought-after and revered coins to come out of the SF mint. For instance, I am thinking like a half-dollar or silver-dollar sized re-issue of the 1909 S-VDB and 1913 S Barber Quarter. Could be made of 90% silver, or .999 fine. Maybe the re-issue cent could be made of .999 fine copper? Just an idea, but it would honor that mint more, in my eyes, than a silver eagle with an S mint mark on it. Other honorable mentions, off the top of my head are 1926 S nickel, 1932 S WQD...that is just about it, but I just woke up so cut me some slack =P
Create a coin that would compliment the old Bay Bridge Commem. Something really ornate with a high relief, or an incuse design. I want unique!
Well, it's also the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, so maybe they will do two commemoratives, one with a reverse of the mint, and one with the bay bridge. That would be exceedingly cool. And I would love to have it.
Special ASE's they can do with little fuss. All of those other suggestions would require new authorizing legislation from Congress and might run into problems with the law that only allows two commemorative coin programs per year. There are already two programs authorized this year.
Easy, reissue the 1909-S VDB cent in proof and/or satin finish. The sales would be off the charts IMO.
I just figured they would steal a couple of other well respected older designs like maybe Oregon Trail and Bay Bridge and reissue those. No sense trying to create something original and good looking, I think they have amply demonstrated they cannot accomplish that.
Also, I hope they keep the mintage low and the household limit high so the flippers can exploit the masses once again. Oh and I almost forgot; they should make sure absolutely nothing is done to improve their ordering system before the set is released for sale.
Too many ASEs, I'm thinking San Fransisco minted cents, nickels, and dimes for circulation, plus a special coin (not an ASE) in a 4 coin set, and eight million of the cents, nickels, and dimes released into circulation
I agree with bsowa1029. As much as I love the ASE design I don't think another ASE set is needed a year after a 25th Anniversary set was put out. Where is the creativity as bsowa1029 asked? Where is the imagination. I know whatever is put out will be limited by the legislation that is passed for it but come on at least make an attempt to be more original!!!
Judging from the amount of 'hate mail' and collector rancor the mint received over the 25th Anniversary set, the new issue (75th Anniversary set) will most likely be ASE's..........
I don't think you have to worry so much about that. The government learning from past mistakes or taking into account what collectors want, really??????
It was just commemorated in 2006!! Granted that was for the anniversary of the fire and the roll the mint played in it but you've already got a silver dollar and a $5 gold piece with images of the SF mint on them. I own both and think it was a great set but I don't know how you do it again. A new 3D image of the mint from another perspective? More ASEs will be boring. I'll pass if that's all they're going to do. I think the uniqueness of that wore off with the 25th set. They should skip this anniversary and come up with something good for the 100th. This sounds like desperation for new revenue more than anybody caring that much about the 75th anniversary of the SF mint.
