So I have read alot of post where people can look at sales figures, and a few other things, and some what predict what coins are going to be a big hit for that year and the year to follow. For instance the 2011 25th anniversary silver eagle set, I had no clue the mint was only going to allow the sale of 100k or I would have bought as many as I could. Now I know that seems stupid to alot of you guys, but I am still learning, so I learned that one the hard way. So does any one have any predictions for things for this year yet? Is there any coins that the mint is only allowing the sale of so many this year? I know the 2012 olympics is coming up, I am sure if they dont already they will soon have a coin for that, what is your thoughts on that? or any of the others. Any little bit helps.
seriously though be careful- the Boy Scout commem looked like a sure thing (and it was in fact a sell out) but it fizzled big time. Sometimes "sure things" are not so sure after all. That being said the 2011 silver eagle set was a real deal sure thing (which is rare)

i also wanna know if Olympic coins are worth buying, at my coin store in canada the olympic 1988 one ounce silver 92.5% Proof is going for spot price at mintage of around 300000. and the silver maples are going for 4 dollars over spot. is the olympic coins a better buy?
Great advice. I was just going to say about the same thing. The 2011 ASE 25th set was like the perfect storm. The stars aligned and all indications pointed to it being wildly popular. The relatively low mintage made it in even higher demand where people who might not have even bought a set if they produced 500k of them, all of a sudden had to have multiples. On top of the people who wanted them no matter what. The things it had going for it was the reverse proof, the first "S" mm ASE, low mintage, above average interest, large number of collectors for various reasons, widely known series, history of the 20th anniv. set... and on and on. This situation doesn't happen every year. Or every 5 years. And, it's still playing out. But so far, those of us who got them are very pleased right now. The Olympic coins are at the bottom of the heap IMO. I personally don't have any interest in them. I don't think there's the demand or the collector base for them to ever be a big hit, value wise. But if you like them, buy them. Why would you want to pay more for something you like? I don't want to. If I could buy AGEs for $200, that'd be great. The forum here has helped alert me to stuff that you might want to jump on from the mint (if you want it). There could be some smaller hits that come out, like the Lincoln chronicles set was in 09 or like the 2001 buffalo commem. But that's not the norm. I'd just stick around here, keep up on the forums and see what catches your eye. The big one I missed out on was the '09 UHR. Loved the coin but it was pretty pricey. I should have pulled out all the stops and got my hands on at least two of them in hindsight but these things are hard to predict. Now one costs what you could have got two of them for when they were first issued.
Issued in 1988 and going for spot price, it might take another 50 or more years before there's a demand for it. Too hard to speculate, it's already been over 20 years with little demand, so perhaps that should give you some insight for future demand which is still fuzzy.
I'm looking forward to the 2012 Star Spangled Banner coin, at least from the designs I saw, most look like they're gonna be good.
Totally agree. I'm looking forward to it too. Don't know if it will be the big hit value wise but they did look attractive. I'd like to own them regardless of what the price does.
I'll grab a Star Spangled Banner and Army Infantry commem in each product offering. I'll try for an unc. proof with the 'banner issue but I won't be speculating on either of these commem's. Collector interest pure and simple.......
Ah, that's true I suppose. If I had the chance, I would have grabbed 5 sets myself and sold 4 of them. I never sell my coins but that would have been an exception to basically get the one set I'd want for basically nothing and likely making easy profit.
I've been looking and thinking about this. Not sure. Need to do a little more research, but I'd better hurry up and make a decision. It's not being sold as bullion, but rather, a Silver Proof Set including the silver cent. Contains 2 ounces of silver. Spendy. 2012 Fine Silver Canadian Proof Set - 200th anniversary of the War of 1812
That's an awesome proof set! Wish it was about $100 less though! Only 20k being produced. Will be interesting to see what they do on the secondary market.
Wow, that is amazing offering. Normally I would say something to the effect of, Canada releases so many dang commemorative and special strike coins that the market is flooded. But that looks like a teL winner with the low mintage.
The thing to keep in mind is that Canada has a much lower population and a mintage of 20,000 is like a mintage of 200,000 in a country like the U.S.
