So I just bought a coin sorting machine. I just ran about $30 dollars through it. But now I want to know what other people have done to make their machine more efficient? Does anyone have any good ideas for a hopper? Or any other help design ideas in general. Any advice would be awesome.
    Thanks

Welcome. There is a thread that was discussing this not too long ago. Maybe a quick search and you'll be able to find it.

Thanks. This is my first post haven't had enough time to look around too much, but look forward to doing so.

In my opinion, these penny sorting machines are for lazy profiteers who don't care about what they have or what historical coins they may one day send to a furnace. I have read about valuable semi-key dates (such as a 1924D) and Indians being found in circulation on this very forum. To think coins like that could be filtered sight unseen into a barrel and eventually sold for scrap (once the law changes) is reprehensible.

    Wow...reprehensible hey?
Those coins have been setting aroun for 90 years for a 1924. Where were you all those years to take your time and search them? They are there for you to look for. But don't chastise people for taking their time and money separating out copper ones. They are doing nothing wrong just like you are doing nothing wrong by not searching all the cents out there before they get to them.

I do get that (as a collector myself) you don't like to see special coins disappear but it happens. Look at what Hobo Nickel guy's did to many better dates but your not calling them names. Or Love token engravers or....

My post was in no way personally aimed at the new guy. I see right through these copper sorting machines. I won't hesitate to point out what they are really for which is to sort out copper pennies into a container sight unseen by people who couldn't care less about collecting coins and have the ultimate goal of selling them to a refinery once the law is changed.

Hate to say it NOS, but good thing you weren't around in 1965 or I bet you would have really got cheese'd off. I know Americans have had pretty stable coinage for long periods, but this kind of thing is normal. Issues like this are dealt with around the world every year, Gresham's Law in action.

To the OP, sorry I don't know what your machine looks like so I don't have an idea for a hopper modification.

Silver American coins are still finding their way to the smelters and will continue to do so.
Gresham's Law is more than just a theory...

Its a coin comparitor just like all the other ones you see on the internet. pretty basic, works good, I would just like to feed it faster than I can do by hand with out dropping $500 on a Ryedale.

A bit off topic, but I've seen the "when the law is changed" thing a few times on various forums. Is there any reason at all to think that the law will be changed to let people smelt pennies?

I expect that eventually the cent will cease to be struck for circulation, probably within the next 10 years.
At that point there would be no point in prohibiting the smelting of copper cents.
At this point in time I don't think it is even profitable to smelt them but if it is, I'm sure it is being done surreptitiously.

I took a plastic container with a lid and cut a slit in the top and mounted the sorter to the lid. Inside the container there are two smaller containers one for copper one for zinc with a divider in between them. But I do hand feed the sorter but it only takes about a minute for 2 rolls. You also might want to sort the zincs twice because the sorter is not a 100% method. Also if your getting rolls from the bank I usually make out better when I get the hand roll vs the bank rolled boxes. Hand rolled rolls have usually been about 50% and bank rolls have only been about 30% copper. Have Fun!!

I was in New Zealand a few years ago and even though when you bought something it could end it something what would require a penny i.e. $1.22 they didn't use pennies so it would just be rounded. Sooner or later this will happen in the U.S.

I got a bos of pennies from the bank the other day that were machine rolled inn plastic and out of 2,500 pennies I only got 36 pre 82's. The other boxes I get I get about 30% 82's.
I also tried to build a metal shoot to make my feeding into the machine faster but i jammed it so often it wasnt any faster. any ideas?
