Once again another noob question. I dont assume what anything is anymore. Can someone let me know what this type of mark is called? and how it happens during the mint process or after? Goes from the rim through the I in united and across. Thanks.
I would say the same, a die crack. Beside being captain obvious, this happens when metal fills the crack on the die when the planchet is struck.
20x hastings loupe, small but efficient. Im pretty sure he was checking the letters for doubled dies...
For those that have copious amounts of spare time to look every coin they own or obtain with a magnifying glass.
Yeah I should get a loop or a better magnifying glass. My cheapo magnifying glass isn't much better than if I had a pair of reading glasses.
Thanks for the info everyone. I just do a quick glance while going through pocket change. If I am at home and have time Ill check with my loupe. If I see something I think looks different, I just throw it under USB microscope, which is also what I took the pictures with.
