I know the state quarter program brought a lot of new collectors into the fold. What are your perceptions about these collectors wanting to upgrade their collections to a higher grade of the same coin in the future? Will they, or won't they? Thanks
well I doubt they will is my thought.. Once they complete that collection and figure out that higher grade coins will bring a better or ANY premium, they should be educated enough to see that there is no upside to the quarters in any grade.. There are just far to many of them, and everybody and their brothers put rolls away.. Heck I bought a collection a while back and paid face for hundreds of rolls of them straight from the bank.. and back to the bank they went.
I completed an uncirculated set of them. I don't plan to upgrade any of them, likely never will. I'm satisfied with the ones I got.
I think in time they will have better value, as with anything else. Most sets the public has are through change, so if you have a nice unc. Set it'll get a nice premium in years to come
I don't think they will upgrade. I have friends that don't collect coin make an album and put them away. Some even forgot they had a set until I pointed it out.
Yup, I already had a circulated set I accumulated over the years from change but started buying more mint sets to put other sets together, realized then I should just put an uncirculated set together as well. They're both tucked away and will sit for now.
The vast majority of the collectors who put together sets of these did it from pocket change. Once it was done so were they. Many of them checked out before the sets were ever finished. Of those that didn't quit, they have already finished the sets in Mint State and most of them will not see any reason to upgrade. Most of those that would be inclined to upgrade probably already have. I see little future potential.
How about high grade MS and Satin slabbed state quarters? Any future potential there? I ask cause I have 1 that I picked up dirt cheap.
Only time will tell really. As for myself, I have a uncirculated set I'm happy with. Most would be MS quality already, so to cherry pick each to get something slightly better would just be wasting my own time and money. If the value goes up, great because I'm not selling them anyways, I just collect for fun, not for future investment.
My grandmother sent me a circulated set...because my WIFE told her the wrong thing...but still I have one. I will hold on to it because it came from my grammy but I wouldn't go out of my way to go buy one. Even in 100 years.
I started this thread for two reasons. In addition to toys, I like to give my nephews slabbed coins for birthdays and Christmas. Usually it's commemoratives. I like to give them something they think is "cool", but also something that could go up in value. I was thinking maybe quarters would be better. And secondly, David Ganz recommends high grade state quarters for future appreciation ... part of his "coin retirement portfolio". So I was even considering buying a few for myself. I know "satins" probably won't have any value because they are plentiful in high grades. But the "business strikes" are more rare in high grades.
I have a circulated and uncirculated set. They were pretty much the first coins I collected. But I don't see them having much value for a LOONG time.
Really nothing for me to upgrade as I have both the uncircs and proofs from Mint sets. Proofs are all 69CAM, and the uncircs are 68-69.
