I had a gentleman respond to my Craigslist ad today. I was offering $30 for non-junk Morgans and book price for Au+ quality and key dates/mint. He said he was surprised to see that and it was the only reason he picked up the phone. He basically said he doesn't want to sell them to a pawn or some lowballer as he watched his dad collect these for many many years. I told him he made the right decision and that he shouldn't feel bad about selling (he kind of does) as long as its to someone that will appreciate them like his father did. And to take his time asthats the only way he'll get real value for the collection. I'm meeting him Tuesday to go through the coins. Ill be sure to take plenty of pictures. I said I can't buy anywhere near all of them but ill bring my price guide and do what I can to help give him a value. I believe he said he'll bring a few bags as his dad just bagged them, never displayed anything. So ill see what I can do cataloging as many as I can. He also mentioned none of them are junk, all fine details. Any members here in Tampa? Id love to get some more honest people in touch with this guy after Tuesday so he gets what his coins are worth.
Hobo, i'm not the most knowledgeable with Vams. I think ill just point him to the St. Petersburg Coin Club. I'll do a google search and educate myself some in the coming days.
That is about $13,000 at melt value Maybe I need to withdraw my 0.15% savings account from Wells Fargo for some of these! .
Sounds like a very cool opportunity. Be sure to take and post many photos to share with all us Morgan lovers on this forum.
Just be careful and don't bring money to the first meeting. You don't want to get setup. Like Reagan said "trust but verify". If it's cool, help the guy and cherrypick your lot....come back and pay later.
And the irony of Reagan using that phrase - it is from the Russian proverb " Доверяй, но проверяй" which is a literal translation of what Reagan used. Gorbachev was pretty impressed that Reagan was using Russian proverbs and it became an icebreaker between the two.
Im very wary of craigslist. He told me he was going to be in Tampa for a business meeting so I checked out his company name with his emailname and it was a match. Plus he already agreed to meet at a bank. no cash on me, picking out what I want, then we go inside bank and make withdrawal/transaction. I also make sure they tell me the car and I jot down the license plate and text it to my friend when I drive by.
James, sometime Tuesday. He said he'll call me before his client meeting so I can come up by the time its done. Shoot me a p/m with email or phone and ill get you in contact He lives in Sarasota.
Could not agree more. In fact I wouldn't bring money to the second meeting either unless it was in the lobby of a police station. Nothing against Craig's list, but there are people who do nothing all day but dream up ways to rip others off using Craig's list as their tool.
I've bought and sold alot of textbooks on CL and have never had a problem but I would be much more cautious with coins. Meeting at a bank in no way guarantees safety, you will eventually need to leave and walk back to your car. I would pack some heat if I was you.
I like to work with a bank because I don't have to carry cash. I see their car, text my friend the plate and once I pickout what coins I want have person walk in with me, do transaction inside. This way they are on camera. Haven't made a deal in a few months though. Besides he emailed me from a corporate email.
Sounds like you've given this some thought for safety's sake. I hope this all goes well for you, and you get a few nice varieties in the deal!
great finds.. great finds.. i might even consider buying to fill a album or page or too just something to make a typeset for my daughter.. who was bore this month..
