I'm not familiar with NGC or tpg standards, and am interested in an answer to this, too. I have always assumed the tpg guarantee of authenticity, but there are many restrikes of medals and jetons, and am curious how they label them.

I also have a question, maybe the medal collectors can answer - How is purity determined? I've seen jetons listed as 2argent, 3argent, and so on... can someone explain the significance of this? I assume this is a reference to silver purity, but am interested in specifics.

Excellent question, Guy. The answer is, "Sometimes yes, and sometimes no!"

In the case of your Queen Anne medal, it is safe to assume that it was an original strike since it had such a high mintage. I'm sure that the references available to NGC would indicate if there were, in fact, later restrikes, and they probably wouldn't have certified it if they had any doubt.

However, this isn't always the case. There were a lot of medals and jetons produced in very, very low mintages by private mints, and the person or entity ordering them didn't want to invest any substantial sum for 4-, 5- or 6-figure quantities just to have them end up sitting in their inventory. As a result, there are instances of restrikes whenever the original supply was depleted.

Here is an example of a Ben Franklin medal that was originally designed by Augustin Dupre in 1786 to celebrate Franklin's 80th birthday. In 2006, the Monnaies de Paris produced this restrike to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth.

Here is a silver English jeton, dating 1630. Not in the best condition, but I really liked the portrait-

I may be missing something, but I only see medal restrikes on the link. Jetons are usually easy enough to identify as restrikes or original.....is it ok to give a link to my website? Here, I have some basic info up so far on my jeton website, jetoncollector.com. I have a little info on there as to how to identify restrikes. Please feel free to look it over, and feedback on the site is appreciated, too.

And here are two more, the first is a 1684 August de Pomereu jeton, second is an 1842 Prefecture de la Seine jeton.

And many thanks to those who have posted their own jetons so far.

Yes, those are purity (titre) levels. As far as I know - I'm not an expert, etc. :) - the "1er titre argent" means Ag 925 or 950 while the "2ème titre argent" is Ag800. Not sure how actively such terms (or "sterling silver" in English) are still used though.

Hey Q, thanks for the link. Nice examples you have there. I don't have many early examples yet, they can be very difficult to find in higher grade.

They sure look great. :) But that Latin ... not that I am very good at it, but there sure are some interesting words, e.g. "oia" or "tot". Beats me. Assuming that the translations are OK, I still don't understand the second one: "Où il y en a trois, il y aura un quatrième". Where there are three, there will be a fourth one? Do you have any idea what that refers to?

Gaston, young brother of Louis XIII has been plotting against the king all his life. Most probably, as on other jetons of his, the latin legend has a double sense. But I didn't manage to find any clue on that one so far. Ideas welcome
