Wow...over 100 views and nobody commented about Natural or Artificial toning or a shot at grade...unexpected.
I think it's natural, rather mellow. Grade? I would say 66, but I think that fairly obvious drag on the neck would keep it at 65.
Yeah, that's strange that no one popped in here to put their ideas forth. I think it might be a 65, I am not any grading expert though. Hope this bumps it so someone will come on and contribute.
I've seen coins get toning like this from some of the "newer" blue whitman albums if the coin was stored in it for a while.
I've a 2000 D mint set, the half has similar toning yet much less dramatic... Did this, by chance, come from a mint set?
Maybe people don't want to say the wrong thing or hurt your feelings. See, identifying or giving opinions on a coins patina is a very touchy thing among coin collectors. But sense you insist, I'll give it a shot. AT coin done "possibly" by a chemical substance such as soap. Grade: Cleaned, flat looking without luster (Ungradable) in my opinion. However, this kind of toning I have seen on "proof Kennedy's" before but not on a normal one.
Thanks for the opinion...don't worry about my feelings...I like the coin and that is what matters. I am just looking for folks more expert than me to give me some good insight. I do not have many toned coins, or spent a lot of time learning about them, so I am not a good judge between AT and NT. Looks better in hand...which seems to be a general thought on toned coins unless the photos are taken by someone with much better skills than I.
I did not pull from a mint set. I found as I continue to look at Kennedy's for interesting ones that I like. Previous owner may have pulled it from a mint set though.
Or from his pants after it came out of the washer/dryer. P.S. I am by no means an expert. As a matter of fact, I know as much as a newbie collector.
Very nice photo and coin. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind me using that picture as a representative of a 1992-D Kennedy on my online coin database? I can PM you a link after I add if it you are ok with it.
