I need a good quality, strong decent size safe for my coins. There are plenty of them out there but I don't Know what is the best brand. I don't want to spend over 150 bucks. Any sugestions?
Whatever you get for $150 will be able to be moved easy enough for someone to steal it. Whatever you get, make sure you can bolt it to the floor from the inside. Thats what I have at least. I have about a $150 Senturysafe that was bought from Sam's that works well for my needs. Its bolted into the concrete from the inside to, so it cannot be moved.
Well I just bought an antique safe fully working for $50 if I could get it out of the house which I did with 4 other strong individuals. Even though its small it weighs atleast 600 pounds so im not worried of someone walking out with it
Why would I want a SDB? I want to be able to enjoy my collection and not have to walk in a bank vault to look at my coins
You said "I need a good quality, strong decent size safe for my coins." I don't think that it exists for $150. IMO you will get a safe that someone will see and take the whole safe or break in super easily. So I opted to recommend a SDB that would at least be Safe.
That's what I would suggest as well. I just got one because I've filled both of my safes and my wife won't let me get another one. She suggests a yard sale! Guy
Fyi most burglars love it when people store their belongings' in safe it saves them the trouble of having to search thru the house for $$$, there is cnbc piece on Hollywood cat burglars.
the average thief can't open a safe. read the papers. most burglars are ham fisted bunglars and don't plan jewel heists. most people get stolen from because they run their mouths.
Add your collection to your home owners insurance(I did), buy a heavy safe, own a gun and know how to use it(keep away from children of course) Join a neighbor hood watch.(if you have neighbors) IMO if you are just a collector and not in it for pure investment then be choosey about what you buy, I don't need to keep a bunch of junk gold & silver coins around if they don't fit into my collection. if the house is going to be unattended for more than 24 hours at a time then think about a safety deposit box.
In those case those thieves will be going after electronics or cash not searching for coin collection and also it doesn't take much to crack a safe if they crack open a door you don't think they bust open a safe? heck even the $200 ones' do break open if you drop them face down. Anyway there are pair of house robbers that i have been hitting the area i live and these guys clean out the whole house pretty quickly. A couple was out for new years eve and house was cleaned out of valuables when they got back.
Buy a few gear traps and set them by the windows and doors. Cover them with a blanket, lol.... In all seriousness if your collection has gold peices in it or silver or rather just really ancient coins I would recommend this personally http://www.staples.com/Sentry-Safe-12-Cu-Ft-Biometric-Fire-Safe/product_330054 It is alittle out of your price range but far worth it if you are serious about protecting your collection!
