    Hello Folks!

I am just getting started in seriously collecting US coins. I wanted to find a reputable online dealer, as there doesn't seem to be many coin dealers located locally. I haven't really found any place outside of Littleton (which seems a bit expensive). Do you guys have any suggestions for somebody looking to purchase silver American Eagles, half dollars, or silver dollars? Thanks so much!

If you are looking for slabbed coins (Especially American Eagles), check out paradise mint. They don't deal in silver dollars but their shipping is fast and free.

You can also check the Numismatic Resources section. There is a list of some of the dealers that I recommend there.

Get a copy of Coin World and check the ads within.
Avoid Littleton, since they charge exorbitant prices for average coins.

Personally, I wouldn't select a dealer based on ads in Coin World or anywhere else. I would get references from satisfied/happy collectors, based on their real-life dealings. And preferably, from knowledgeable collectors, who are happy with good reason, rather than because they don't know what they're doing.;)

Agree with those, especially Apmex for clarity of their website.

There are a few good suggestions here, and I'd like to add Gainesville Coins. Their prices and service were good in my experience. I'd also like to recommend buying anything over $100 and of numismatic value in person. Since grading is subjective, and eye appeal isn't reflected in the Sheldon grading scale, I personally prefer to examine what I consider higher priced coins.

Hmm. What's your definition of "defective"?

When dealing on line, I feel it is extremely important to deal only with folks who have a 100% money back guarantee. Coins always look a bit different than their pictures, and sometimes a lot different so it is a good idea to protect yourself.

If you select a dealer who is a member on the ANA, they are required by the dealer code of ethics to offer a refund on numismatic material.

keeping in mind that a coin from the mint is a collector item defective means not of collector quality. A spot on a proof coin for example is a defect. I suppose that defective means an item with a defect or blemish. The first spouse coins have become so overwhelmingly defective that it appears to be almost impossible to acquire a collector quality example.

Some of the best dealers/online (period) krytocomics (Spelling?), Juliancoin, djwcoin, and john-strategies. They will not steer you wrong. Especially Juliancoin. These are under my favorite sellers list.

I don't think anyone mentioned it but www.govmint.com offers a wide range of coins from all over the world. They seem to stock a lot of bullion silver and gold coins from America and other world countries.

    Hope it Helps,

How do their prices compare with Provident Metals? They also sell a lot of bullion coins from around the world.

I just did a spot check on pricing for Canadian Maple Leaf coins......

    Govmint's price for a 1oz 2012 Silver Maple Leaf = $42.95
    Provident's price for a 1oz 2012 Silver Maple Leaf = $33.51

    Govmint's price for a 1oz 2012 Gold Maple Leaf = $1,899.00
    Provident's price for a 1oz 2012 Gold Maple Leaf = $1,703.50

Seems to be a steep markup there.

Wow, thanks guys! There is a huge plethora of information here. It certainly gives me a nice list of places to search for coins. Too bad there isn't one place that carries it all!
