I was wondering how bad it would be to wipe down a coin with a baby wipe (non scented for sensitive skin)? I did it with a penny and it cleaned it up nicely so I was wondering if it's something that could be used on some of my coins that are actually in my collection....?
Don't do it. You may not be able to see the damage with the naked eye but wiping a coin can cause microscopic scratching. Once you damage your coin it the damage is irreversible. Knowledgeable collectors want original, untouched coins.
Thank you. I had a feeling that I shouldn't do it. Is there a "safe" way of gettin muck off of a coin?
with hobo. never ever cleaned a coin and dont reccomend it anyone. once cleaned most of the time the lustre if any is destroyed
With some of the coins that I get back for change or find, some of them have sticky stuff on them (or have been what looks like glued to paper) or if you have a 14yr old, ones with candle wax on them...
maybe u can pick some of it off. i dont think i would do it to purchased coin or numismatic valued coin but if its just a hole filler or pocket change it shoudnt matter a whole lot. ive heard of ppl taking dish soap and hot water and putting the coin in for a few seconds then lightly rubbing with finger tip but never tried it but it may help if ur willing to do it
Do not use anything to wipe the surface, a baby wipe will damage the coin. With common, low value stuff that would otherwise be worth face value, I take them to the sink with hot running water. Hold the coin under the hot water and rub it between your fingers. That method works very well!
