Greetings, Just wanted to pick some minds on the forum. Was a collector many moons ago and renewing interest in the hobby Currently looking to pick a coin to concentrate on to make the emphasis of my collection. Would like to concentrate on a coin that is easy to pick up and affordable yet might increase in value by the time I retire in 20 years. With those thoughts in mind was thinking what coin is currently a diamond in the rough... The ugly librarian who loosens her hair takes of her glasses and becomes a 10-10. Had a few thoughts about the Franklin half or the mercury dime these coins were decimated by the two major melts and probably by the next. My thoughts are these coins may have some upside potential. It is my understanding these coins have been kind of overlooked any thoughts opinions arguments please go forth. Thanks in advance Stephen

I was looking at purchasing a Franklin half graded MS-65 with a bid price of $80 but my boss only offered me $11 for it. The thing is silver
has taken away premiums for dates like the '55 Franklin in low grades.

I have a hunch that high grade MS Jefferson silver War Nickels will be very hot in the future. It seems a lot of them have disappeared in the latest melting frenzy. I'm trying to acquire some now and finding it's a lot harder than it was a year or so ago. Just my five cents worth. :thumb:

i would say anything that is considered a key date 1909 s VDB lincoln cent, 1914 d lincoln cent, 1931 s lincoln, 1916d mercury and so on are always going to command a strong premium in high grades, wether they will go up in value in the next 20 years i couldnt tell you but they have increased tremendously since i began collecting 10 years ago. you might also think about invesing in silver or gold bullion as well.

I'd say franklins and Capped bust quarters.

Thanks for responses so key dates/mintage seem like some of the popular undervalued choices any thoughts on just collecting key dates

My thought is "Spendy" but if you can afford to, I would do some of the key dates in higher conditions. I would stay away from the 09-S VDB personally because the number of higher grade examples available.

i wouldnt just collect the key dates imo the other coins are just as nice and in higher grades still sell for a little more than you would expect. investing in numismatics is like playing the lottery, sometimes you win and win big and other times you lose. key dates arent undervalued but they have alot of potential in going up in price. if yu do buy them buy graded specimens graded and put into slabs by the top fiew grading services. (so you dont buy counterfit coins and dont overpay for something that has been overgraded) pcgs and ngc are considered by many to be the best. icg and anacs are a close second. i suggest buying books and researching before you buy anything.

My little diamond in the rough I liked to buy was the 27s quarter. Look into it, its a very scarce coin of a short series.

Those coins are not undervalued. The cents are actually overvalued, because Lincoln cents are one of the most well-known and collected coin type. I don't know much about the 1916 D Mercury dime, but I know that there are dozens of dates that are much rarer than the ones you mentioned, and are worth much less. However, since they are popular, they have value, so they can increase with greater intensity than unpopular coins.

To the OP: Is this thread supposed to be the most undervalued coin, or the coin that has the most upside?

OK i am new, i like all denominations, but i think you all have missed the boat. All the coins you are talking about have been so picked through that it near impossiable to find a decent coin in any denomination. But i have a solution, try IKE DOLLARS, you buy the forty percent dollars, BU or Proof does not matter and you buy a book lets say from the IKE GROUP (tell Rob Zimerman i sent you) and buy one of there books on how to collect, i recomment the 12 dollar book its cheap and 25 percent off this month, take the book and cherry pick the ike dollars and simply put them aside and not slab them, this is a young moder coin and few know about it, you can find valuable coins for few dollars and still have the silver if you do not find a rare coin. This is not the only way to collect but as a new member i have quiet a bit to say about all denominations, assuming i did not break any rules, it not unusal for me to be trown out of a club the first month. The last one i was thrown out of Rob Zimerman took mercy on me and let me back in, at which point i hope i have been invaluable to him books he writes, a wounderful group to be part of, i am looking forward to being part of your group and wounder how i can help you as i have the ike group- chuck

i was just saying i dont think there are many terribly undervalued coins but that key dates will generally go up because the demand is always high. just my opinion.

I'd also say uncirculated 1983 P&D Washington quarters.

Shield nickels and 3 cent peices have a lot of keys and have been on the backburner for a while, but probably always will. Its the relative scarcity thing. A 1909 s VDB and a 1916d mercury dime and really the whole series of wheat cents, mercury dime, walking halves, morgans, and franklins are all common. It is just that they are all very popular series (except the franklins maybe).
That is why I collect seated coins, mostly quarters and halves. They are genuinely scarce coins for the most part and there is still strong demand.

Just want to stimulate a discussion

[To the OP: Is this thread supposed to be the most undervalued coin, or the coin that has the most upside?] I'm just delighted I can pick the minds of the forum I believe I am more interested in most upside but I got to temper that because upside sometimes come crashing down. Thanks again Stephen

Hi there AU, i was kicked out due to politics, it seems a seller on ebay was also a member of the IKE GROUP, i did nothing wrong but simply told him he wanted to much on ebay for coins i was interested in, which had nothing to do with the IKE GROUP, so when i became member i noticed his name and said hi, was booted ten minutes latter. You need to appreciate that coin collecting is very political, take a look at CPG better know as Cherry Pickers Guid, it is not written well, its the same stuff as before and through out the denominations there is no giving of the value of the error coin, you would think with the delays in the production of this book you would have this valuable informtion, to me its was a poor reproduction of the past issue and a wast of my money to buy the new book. O well to make my point the reason why they did this was there internal and external politics. So when you have that you can boot people as you see fit, Dr. Robert Zimerman the Ike Group president reinstated me and i am certain he has done this to others, he is a great book writer and mentor and would love to have his and this group share information, i have learned a lot and your our should i say our groups are almost identical, easy transition for me and i am certain for you, recommend you simply type in IKE GROUP and take a look- any other information you want of me, chuck
