I got this brown seal today.

Now for a dumb question. (which will show my lack of experience) how do I find out how many of a particular note was printed ?

a big part of coin collecting is the mintage. I can just type in a particular design and date online and find the mintage of a coin.

but i'm having a hard time finding anything on paper money. too many variables ? I only found a site that will tell me the "run" of newer paper money.(i think it goes back to the 1980's)

(so my question is, is there any way or websites to search the mintage or "run" of older notes ? and does that matter ?

I think you can find some helpful links posted in this thread: National Bank Charters

Also here's something else for you regarding numbers of notes printed:

    COINS:
    mint : minted : minting : mintage

NOTES: print : printed : printing : printage

I found this link on printing figures starting with series 1928. but it's wikipedia so I don't know if it's correct.

It appears that the CD from Don Kelly is no longer available as a separate purchase. If I read the site right, it lists banknotes which had a printing of 320,000+. So if the note is extremely rare, it may not be listed. With all the bank closings and such, the records are probably long gone by now. I will keep an eye out on eBay to see if anyone ever offers the CD at a reasonable price.

In today's mail — Series 1976 $2 FRN First Day of Issue (FDI) with 13-Star Flag over Independence Hall stamp (Scott# 1622):

This note complete another Federal Reserve District set for Series 1976 $2 FRN FDI with the same 13-Star Flag over Independence Hall stamp. By coincidence, I noticed that, through separate purchases, I have now have consecutive serial numbers 25, 26, 27, each with the same stamp!

I also received the note below. It isn't in the best of shape, but I can't resist Star Notes.

    Nice!
How do you mean that it 'just showed up'? Do you happen to work in a bank or you found this some other place in circulation? Such that as a collector you didn't go out seeking this note, but it found you?

Have decided to give coins a little break and skipped over to US notes. Finally picked up my first large silver cert 1923 $1 Woods/White F238, looks to be VF cond. Only flaw seems to be the small stain on the bottom, no tears or pinholes, it's actually very crisp. Let me know what you guys think. I think I have found my new passion, these large notes are amazingly addictive.
