So, I was just recently given a coin collection that my grandmother started years ago and Ive been going through some of the booklets of coins. I'm not quite sure what to look for, however I did find a Indian Head penny from 1877. According to about.com its worth $440.00, any chance it could be worth more then that? Its a dark brownish color, and some of the letters have faded, but the year is clearly visible. I know you need pictures, but all I have is a crappy camera on my blackberry. She also has about 31 Buffalo nickles ranging from dates 1913-1938 and 42 Jefferson nickels ranging from 1939-1961, 9 are labeled to be silver in the book. I not looking to sell, unless the price out weighed the sentimental value (which I know isn't possible from what I have searched) If I wanted to get the 1877 penny graded, how would I do it? What is the process like?
Welcome to CoinTalk. Depending on condition it could be worth a lot more than that - IF IT IS GENUINE. You're right; we will need to see good photos (of both the obverse and reverse) to be able to help you very much. You can take the coin to your local coin dealer and have him submit the coin for you. The grading service will authenticate and grade your coin for a fee. Whatever you do - - - DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COINS!!! You can significantly reduce the value of your coins if you clean them.
Welcome to the neighborhood! Before you think about submitting coins for grading, you need to learn a little more about them. The 1877 IHC sounds like it might be the most valuable of the bunch, but without photos, we can't determine the condition, if it is genuine or possibly a problem coin. All of these factors should be taken into consideration before deciding to spend money having it certified. Chris
if you post some pics of the collection of close up of the going i could give you some estimated graded values
