Finally broke down and sent in the 98 sms for a grade. It came back as a 69. Thanks for all the replies!

    1. What is a RPM? I know that I have heard of it, but forgot.
    2. What do you mean by silver clad? 40%?
    3. Why are the silver clad 71D and 77D considered elusive?

    Thanks.

    1. Repunched Mint Mark
    2. Silver Clad is the common term for 40% Silver coins which consisted of 80% Silver/20% Copper cladding over an 80% copper/20% silver core.
    3. These are elusive because they are considered "Off Metal Errors". Very few exist and they are quite expensive.

At th very minimum, they are one die coins meaning, the same die was used for their production. Of note on that die is a little tick on the tail of the 4 in the date. There is alos doubling in the motto WE TRUST. The die also has numerous die polishing marks on an otherwise pristine die.

The coins produced from the die were obviously done with higher than normal pressure and were given special handling. Few if any contact marks are obvserved and the coins all have what appears to be a special finish.

Good for you! The 98-S typically retails for $280 or so in 69.

Thank you. That was very helpful. One last question, what is a "off meta error."??

    Thanks again.

Wow and super wow. What does BP mean? How did that coin come to have such georgeous color? Any ideas? Was it a proof?

Off Metal means that it wasn't intended for production.

"BP" means "Buyer's Premium". Most auction houses charge a premium, typically 15% or so, to the winning bidder. Some also charge the seller a smaller amount, but this is how the auction house makes their money.

bp = buyers premium ... basically a surcharge put on by the auction house to offset their costs.

This coin was mint state (not proof) ... and was toned in an album (note how the colors are more intense near the rim where it touched the album cardboard).

Proof is a special manufacturing process which produces coins of extremely high relief with "mirror-like" fields.
The mirrors of the fields are exactly that in that they could be used just like a hand held mirror.

The coins field is anything which is lower than the rim. The stuff which sticks up to the rim height are called devices.

I agree with you! Please see mine on my website including the 1964 SMS MS67 PCGS. I need to get that one to Todd someday for a better photo, but he has photographed a lot of the rest and the earlier ones are all there. The photos are also visible on the PCGS website under VDBCoins.com. I think you can see the sets even without being a member.
