    All,

Please give me your opinion. Should I leave the Ikes in the original container? I always pull them out of the "brown box" because they are acidic. You know the hard plastic case and whatever else holds the coin? Should I break them out and put them in Safflips? As far as I know Safflips are the most archival besides Cointains and Lighthouse rounds. I normally use Interceptshield for 2x2 storage. Any input is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Ben. Tampa FL

Two ways of looking at that I suppose. They aren't worth much to begin with, but they are worth a bit more in the original packaging. So that says to leave them alone.

I'd never use Saf-flips, or any other flip. Nor would I ever do anything but recommend that people NOT use them. But for the sake of argument say you were going to use a hard plastic holder for storage. Even then I'd probably be reluctant to take the coins out of the original packaging, other than to remove the inner hard plastic holder from the box, and then store them.

I see no reason to do otherwise. Those original hard plastic holders are as good as anything else you can buy.

Doug, i'm curious as to why your would never use saf-flips or any other flips? Please elaborate.

Thank you, your opinion would be much appreciated.

To add to what Doug said, I have 20 of the Brown Ikes that I've had since the mid-70's. They were given to me by my parents, and they are still in the original government packaging. Only one of them has a trace of light, golden rim toning. All of the rest are just as brilliant as the day they were struck. If stored properly in a dry, cool climate, they will stay that way indefinitely.

I've got a pile of brown box Ikes in the OGP and recommend leaving them be.
If they haven't gotten any milk spots by now, they aren't likely to in the forseeable future.
The only one that's worth more than bullion is the 1973, IMO

Many of the brown ikes i've seen in the original holder have the milky white toning or discoloration. Not spotting.

It's pretty simple. Any non PVC flip is too hard, too brittle. Their edges at the opening are sharp and those edges will scratch a coin every time you take the coin in or out of the flip just as fast as a slide in an album will scratch a coin. Also, even the coin moving around inside the flip pocket will cause rub on the high points. The plastic in the non PVC flips is just too hard.

Why do think dealers always use PVC flips ?

That makes sense. I always wondered why dealers would use a PVC holder when they knew it was harmful to the coin. So it would seem the old Mylar 2x2 is a better choice for a cheap and effect holder? yes/no

No, 2x2s have their own set of problems, even worse problems in some ways. For one thing you have the cardboard dust issue. Cardboard dust is often very hard and sharp, it can hairline and in some cases scratch a coin. And it will almost always cause a coin to get spots on it. Then there is the staple issue - more scratches. Then there is the very thin mylar window - that offers just about zero protection to the coin. Then you have the sulphur issue - almost all 2x2s contain sulphur, bad for your coins.

There is only 1 kind of holder that should ever be used, that is a hard plastic holder. Period, end of story.

If I could add to Doug's post, the non-PVC Saf-Flips just do not store that well as the glossy surface scuffs up rather easily with any movement. This results in a foggy looking flip housing a proof coin.

I'm with the crowd of leaving them in the OGP.

For those stating they are only worth melt except the 73-S, I'll buy all you have at melt value. Granted, the coins aren't very popular but there is an abundance of die varieties available. All you gotta do is look. One of my best coins was purchased for "melt".

If you consider that to be "well". Personally I think it is hideous and as is just worth scrap. Personally I think that type of "toning" is actually hazing from the outgassing of the plastic that was baked in dealers car trucks as they drove from show to show back then. In short the result of storage for moderate lengths of time at 120+ degrees with constant variations in temperature.

Inclined to agree about the haze on Proofs of that time period. Of course it's not just the Ikes but pretty much Proofs of all kinds.

Good point from an expert; I appreciate it. I guess the best is a hard plastic like Lighthouse or Whitman 2x2 or something like that. Would you give me your opinion on the following: I have a small percentage of my collection in the cheap cardboard/mylar 2x2, some are in 2x2 boxes some are in the pages that have 20 pockets and the hole punch on left. Should I leave them there? I have heard the carboard dust can damage the coins over time.

:thumb::)I been told Anacs is offering the same as holder type for Ike Brown box, but have not seen one yet.
But have seen Anacs graded GSA in ads.
