Does anyone else hoard proof half dollars? I can get them for dirt cheap at the local coin store. I like them because dimes are too small and quarters are the same price.
I'm putting together an Uncirculated Kennedy set but likely won't go beyond that (except adding new years to it of course). Besides, I don't hoard anything, I collect!
I dont hoard any coins, but if i hoarded halfs, i dont think i would hoard the newer clad ones? they have waaayyy less silver and just the melt value alone on a 1964 is $10.36 and 1965-1970 is $4.24 so there is a big difference in value. so imo i wouldnt hoard newer ones.
I think it would actually be fun to assemble a proof Kennedy half collection. I enjoy collecting halves, and it's definitely in my budget.
I save all the impaired proof halves I pull from boxes searching. Not worth more than 50c but the collector in me cant return them to the wolves. Here was a fun one. I have about 15 different dates with duplicates, so when I get a few more i will probably start a folder.
i only have one kennedy half that im keeping. proof 1984. not worth anything spectacular ( unless it grades high) but i paid a buck for it so i cant go wrong. i have a 1969 with pvc damage that is just sitting with other silver that is availible to melt in case of a family emergency.
You could probably improve the looks of this one by carefully using a little acetone. It would at very least remove the fingerprints.
It's funny; in hand the fingerprints really aren't distracting, and the surface damage is more visible. But I like your idea. Sounds like a before and after thread is in my near future. Thanks.
I have a set of circulating Kennedy halves, and am in the process of completing both the clad and silver proof sets. Just a few more of the newer ones to go.
The clad proofs should be a good thing to have someday. The attrition on these is much higher than most people figure and eventually someone will go to buy one and find the well has gone dry. But be prepared to wait a very long time. It could be in the near future but it's more likely to be farther out and might be quite far out. I'd guess a minimum of five years and likely more like ten. Nice attractive specimens will be desired by collectors so it might be a good idea to buy proof sets instead and sell the others. If you can get nice rolls cheap then it's as good a gamble as many things. Old clad halfs have already suffered more than 40% attrition and a few of the coins still in sets are corroded or otherwise unattractive. I believe that before the proofs get attention the Uncs will get attention. Indeed, the Uncs going sharply higher will be the signal to start packing away the proofs I believe.
I have a series, proofs and P&D uncirculated. Other than that, not worth hoarding clads. Silver, is another story.
I don't really hoard them but at times I find old proof sets with toned coins in them. I usually buy them and end up with a clad Kennedy. It makes me think I'm getting an extra bonus on top of the colorful coins.
