Why is this selling for so much?

Go look at the bidding history from the link in the OP.

The winning bidder made the second through sixteenth bid with no other bids appearing in between any of his bids. If he made max bids as you and rick say, wouldn't the bids he was outbidding appear between those bids and be counted in the total number of bids received for that auction?

There were only 18 bids total on this item, and the winning bidder made 16 of them, with 15 being consecutive with no other bids from other bidders appearing in between his initial 15 bids.

EDIT TO ADD: The other thing is, the winning bidder's bids were all just minutes apart from one another, and in some cases, just seconds apart.

You can click on Show Automatic bids but it doesn't provide much else but you have to pay attention to the dates and times as well.

This is why I don't think shilling is involved.

u***7 only made one actual bid in the process. A max bid of 36.35 but was retracted, what appears to be back to 35.00 on the 2nd, 3 days before end of auction.

d***u made a bunch of bids and went has high as 55.00, but retraced on the 1st, likely back down to make u***7 the high bidder again.

u***7 maybe realized after he saw the price go from a few bucks to over $30 they were gonna pay, had that second thought of paying $35 for a crappy coin and retracted, which then made d***u the winner at $35.00. So if there was shilling in this auction, it was d***u who was driving up the price and they ended up with the item anyways as the result.

I'd imagine if d***u was the shiller, driving the price up on another member, they would have retracted to make u***7 the winner. There was no action from Jan 2nd to the 5th on this item, when most of the bidding and retracting took place. Clearly the bid history would show that d***u is the potential shiller with all those bids to drive the price up, they did retract and made u***7 the high bidder, but so did u***7 three days before the end of auction. If you're gonna go through the trouble of driving up the price, why end up being the winner of your own auction?

At least that's my theory but then again, bidding history on eBay sort of sucks with the info they give you and who knows if it's truly accurate.

Look at the dates and times. Like I said before, some were minutes apart, and some were actually seconds apart.

    The bidding sequence was:
    1) e***l makes the initial bid
    2) d***u makes a bunch of bids
    3) d***u retracts one bid, leaving a high bid of $35
    4) u***7 makes one bid for $36.36, becoming the high bidder and showing d***u's high bid
    5) u***7 retracts the bid, making d***u the high bidder at the original bid
    6) u***7 makes a new bid matching d***u's high bid (which was revealed in step 4)

Look at the sequence again - d***u didn't make, change, or cancel any bids after u***7 started bidding. d***u's bid cancellation was before u***7 made a bid.

u***7 made the high bid, revealing d***u's bid, retracted his high bid, and placed a new bid equaling d***u's bid. The sole purpose of u***7's bid was to make d***u pay the max amount bid.

d***u can't be a shill bidder. With the exception of the first bid, none of the bids changed the high bid, including the bid retraction.

u***7 is probably a shill bidder - the first bid showed the current maximum bid. It was cancelled and replaced by a bid forcing another bidder (d***u) to pay the maximum amount bid.

If it's not worth $35 then don't put that as your max bid, problem solved. :yes:He was obviously willing to pay that much, otherwise he shouldn't have put the amount. He wouldn't have been taken advantage of if he just bid on it instead of putting a ridiculous top price. Ebay leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
