Cameo Penny?

    Hi all,

I was a little confused between the difference between Red Proofs (that is, pre-1972 proofs) and Cameo proofs. I know the current proof sets all contain Deep Cameo proofs, but does that mean that Cameo is the midpoint between Reds and DCAMs? I read a bit online and basically I currently understand that Cameos are basically DCams, to a lesser extent (apparently).

Anyways...sorry to be beating around the bush. I have here pictures of a 1964 Proof penny cut from a 1964 proof set. Wondering if this was a Cameo or Red proof penny. There appears to be a little contrast between the fields and ol' Abe, but I'm a newb on this subject. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

it is incredibly difficult to discern cameo from pictures, so I doubt that anyone can be of much help without examining the coin in hand.

As to cameo being between Ultra cameo and red... kind of. Cameo occurs when the devices (bust, date and legends) have a frosty finish to them. Ultra Cameo is a much heavier frost. Red is red but what I think you mean to say is brilliant proof. red, red-brown, and brown are color indicators and have nothing to do with cameo frost.

My suggestion to you and others wishing to learn more about cameo proofs is to read a copy of "The PCGS Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detecting". Many of these subjects are covered in lavish detail. More so than you will find here for the most part, although, the answers here are interactive and therefore also quite valuable.

I just got this info from Doug, If you roll up half a piece of paper, then put it over the lens and make a tube to the coin from the lens, it can give a better picture of what you are asking about.

Greatest simple fix ever. Do you think it would grade cameo? (Not to steal the thread)

Just tried that now, here's a few more pictures. Look frosted at all?

From what I see, it is only partial cameo, not full to grade with cameo on the slab.

Is partial Cameo even worth anything? :p

Would it be worth it to get a true D/Cam pre-1970 cent slabbed (assuming it's mid-range MS)?
