Thinking about selling some coins myself. I see two problems right off the bat. 1. How can I ask someone to send a check when they don’t know me from Adam’s House Cat? 2. If I receive a check and ship the coin certified or registered how do you prove there was actually a coin in the package?
Easy. Don't accept a personal check. Money order or paypal only. Then it's the luck of the draw who you're going to deal with. The odds are with you that the transaction will go fine. But I realize it doesn't make you feel any better given the fact that there has to be "odds". You don't have much choice though.
I've never had a problem with a personal check. As far as paypal goes I heard horror stories about them but never personally used them either as either buyer or seller.
Theres horror stories with checks too. I know alot of firearms dealers hate them and put long holds/ waiting periods on check purchases before they'll ship. The buyer can cancel the check long after they receive the item and the seller is just out. I bought a gun this fall and made the mistake of paying by check. After waiting for it to get there, then the clock started for the 10 'business' day wait. After holidays, weekends and shipping, it took a month to get it in hand from the transfer dealer. They dont just do holds like this for the fun of it. Many of them have been burned and you can be too if somebody pays by check.
Again, I have no experience with paypal but I've heard, maybe incorrectly, that paypal can come back on the seller up to 90 after the sale.
I think its also important to know who you are selling to. If you "meet" a person online ( even here ) and they just started an account today, I would be more hesitant to take a check. If though a person has some "credibility" I could see me taking a check for an item. With paypal I have only had one problem, and its when I broke my own rule about selling internationally. It was through ebay and the person did have good feedback. After two months the person claimed they still didn't have the item so paypal put a freeze on the amount that they paid. But a week later the buyer received the item, and the hold was removed. All-in-All I think with any of that its common sense, and like any other transaction if something smells fishy, its probably is.
Lots of good info here, thanks. I wasn’t trying to hijack LSMODELS’s thread. Thought this might be of interest to him as well.
