I received 6 nickels and 1 dime today that were all strong die clash coins , this one was in the lot. It is clashed and counter clashed.look at the nice counter clash of Jefferson's coat collar and the nice counter clash of the O in Monticello on the reverse side. the O is also easy to see behind the head. two letters are also visible near Jefferson's forehead.
That's a awesome looking dollar there Chris . It is probably quite rare. I collect die clash coins if they are a strong clash and I only have a very few of the counter clash coins. Troy
Two of them were 81p , one 83p , one 85p , one 86p and one 88p . the dime in the lot was a 97p . all 7 of these coins are extremely strong die clash coins and can be partially seen with the naked eye.. the counter struck coin is probably quite rare because for me it is about impossible to find one. I don't know how it is where other folks live but there are not many here where I live. I have looked thru billions of coin rolls over the years and this coin is the best one I have ever seen. I have seen photos of counter clash coins on the internet but have never been able to find a really good one like this one by searching thru bank rolls. EDIT: I forgot to mention that all of the photos are of the same coin.
How do you tell the difference between a clash and a counter-clash? Wouldn't both be incuse on the coin and have a similar appearance? Obviously I'm not familiar with counter-clashes.
A die clash can either be incuse or raised , it just depends on what part of a die's design that comes into contact with the other die. a counterstrike will always be the same as a coin's original design but offset from the original design. a counterstrike is when a already clashed set of dies clashes again and this reverses the old clash marks back to the normal design but out of place from the normal design. Go to maddieclash.com and you can see some clash and counter clash coins. a few of my coins are on there somewhere.
Well I know Ken potter describes a counter-clash a a piece of scrap metal being struck in the die and then that piece imparts the clashed details onto the coin. I understand that the position of the details will be offset, but it should still have the same appearance as a normal die clash?
I doubt that Ken said it that way because he is a very smart person when it comes to coins. You probably read what he wrote wrong. what your are describing would be a broken die where a piece of the broke die makes a impression on the undamaged die.
From Ken Potter's own site (http://koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htm) Referring to a 1983 cent variety: "This is the result of a counter clash; a piece of scrap steel was struck by a die and then counter sunk into this die."
In post #8 I described what a counter clash was for you. I looked at all of Kens coins he had for sale and I never saw the coin you are talking about. anyway it looks like Ken went on to say counter sunk which has nothing to do with a counter clash. If this is not what he was talking about then I have no idea. anyway I'm sure Ken knows what a counter clash coin is.
I'm not sure what "counter sunk" means, but I guess it can either be the metal piece being stuck in the die, or imparting a negative image of the clashed details back onto the die. I first read it as being the former.
It's a great Type I counterclash in association with a double set of clash marks. It's definitely a candidate for listing on www.maddieclashes.com. Please contact BJ Neff at maddieclashes@aol.com for instructions on how to submit it. There are two types of counterclash, that are only remotely related. Yours is a Type I. Much rarer and much more valuable are Type II counterclashes. These are caused by a piece of hard metal that is struck twice, with movement between strikes.
Thanks Mike for the information about the counter clash coins. I suppose I was always thinking wrong , I thought this only involved the coin dies but never could figure out how the counterclash could get so far out of position. my wife is sick right now and when she get's better I will contact BJ . we used to email each other quite a bit and I have not talked to him for a while. I may also send BJ that slabbed coin of mine for him to see. I miss you and BJ on the Coneca forum. just because we disagree a lot that is only normal for us coin folks. Troy
