1888 Morgan MS67/with Question

I've got a few nice Morgans possibly worth something, but the only problem they are graded by NTC which is NOT a good grading service. I am considering to have the really good ones re-graded via PCGS or NGC.
If I get my coins re-graded, I'm wondering what it cost to go PCGS or NGC? What are the chances of being able to trust a coin grade Co. making sure they don't trade coins with you?

I think you would be in for a big disappointment if you submitted either of the NTC coins. A lot of collectors know that NTC overgrades, but they are also known for slabbing problem coins, and I don't think either of those will get anything but a details grade. Save your money!On that NGP (????) slab, it's hard for me to tell because the photo was taken at a slight angle which will sometimes hide some marks. Besides, I could only give you half a grade without seeing the reverse.Chris

 

There is one other thing I forgot to mention............


Stop buying coins in third world slabs. You will only get ripped off if you can't grade them yourself, in-hand!

Is NGP a good grading service? Do you think this 1888 Morgan is worth a regrade?
I've got quite a few coins I will take pictures of some graded and some not graded. Yes, I was aware all the time that NTC
is not a good grading service. At the time I bought the NTC coins I did not know it though.

Currently, the two best, and most reliable and reputable are, NGC Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and PCGS Professional Coin Grading Service.

ANACS American Numismatics Association Coin Service and ICG Independent Coin Grading are 3rd and 4th.

Anything else is known as a basement grader, not reputable, and usually over grade everything they slab.

both of the NTC & 1888 coin should grade but no way near MS-66.but send them to Anacs they should have a sale soon 10-$10.00 w/Free return shipping

My guess is that NGP is a self-slabber, and this coin is overgraded by 3-4 grades.

Yeah, I'm sure it probably is over graded by 3-4 points. I may check with PCGS and see what they think.

I think you would be better off just cracking the NGP slabs and submitting those coins to PCGS or NGC in a flip and get a more unbiased opinion on grade from either of those two.

 

I'll go one step further in, first I agree with Doug on the re-grade. But in looking closer at the 88, we know it is definitely NOT a MS67, IMHO it would come back in the lowest MS scale of grade, if not an AU label, because of the hits all over the obverse and the reverse is not all that terrific either.

It's a common Morgan, 19,138,000 struck at Philadelphia that year, and unless it's a rare VAM, which I don't see from these pics, it would not be a cost effective idea to resubmit it to a more reputable TPG.

The 79-S, now that's a keeper and does look like NGC hit the mark on that grade.

The 21-D, I don't agree with ANACS' grade on that. Looks like it should be more highend AU, but not MS.

 

We haven't seen the reverse of the 79-S, but I shall assume that it is not the "78 Reverse" (PAF) variety.

I think that's one that could be right on the line of 64/65. And as Chris pointed out, the OP hasn't posted pics of the reverse of that one for us to look at either.

 

This is why I only purchase PCGS & NGC graded coins.
