For $22.50 I can use it as a paper weight on my desk and not be out any money. Besides, it was the branch of service I served under. What can you loose by putting it in your collection? Only an up side to this one.
I'm curious now how many were submitted. Maybe people thought it wasn't worth the effort to get them graded given the performance of other clad half commems and not very many were sent in. It might be worth picking them up in the OGPs. That first 70 would be very well received. If you know what I mean.
The mint charged about $8 for the Bald Eagle Half - on this one they raised it up to $20- that scared off all of the buyers.
my case for the coin: the previous key to the commem half series was the 1996 olympic swimmer unc- mintage 50K+- the Army mintage is in the 40K+- range. Any collector would be happy to pay $100 for the olympic swimmer. the olympic swimmer collector base includes a few olympic swimmers and about 49,800 commem half dollar collectors- the Army collector base is huge- the Army is the largest branch of the US militry- add to that all of the collectors who missed the offering. The Army half has the minuteman which is a popular image and the overall design is superior to the olympic swimmer. Now here is the clincher- clad commem halfs have always sold for less than $10- through some weird pricing mistake this one was priced at more than twice that amount. Collectors thought they would pick this coin up in the after market for $10 and let the orig buyer take the loss- AND THEY WERE RIGHT! for the first few days after the mint pulled the coin they sold for less than $20 on ebay (I posted an alert to let ct readers know). Now there are tons of collectors who need this key coin to complete their set- it will skyrocket.
I like your "case" for the coin Dan. Love it when modern stuff turns crazy valuable overnite. Just don't expect it to stay that way though. Sure glad I got mine at the mint when the "gettin' was good".
While its not clad nor silver, the Jackie Robinson Commemorative has enjoyed some fairly hefty premiums in price due to its limited production numbers.
But for every person who likes the subject matter there's a person who finds it appalling (like me) .....It's the equivalent to a Third Reich coin.
OK guys, I just perusued Misc coin websites for a a long time (Maybe 2 hrs) and I found website with them in stock with no price change, and I bought them all! So tell me how I did. *4 NGC PF 70 UCAM Early Releases-$45 each for a total: $180 *6 NGC PF 69-$19 each for a total: $114
I think you wanted to buy the MS coins, not the PF ones. It's the MS that have the very high premiums.
On the average, about $75-$100 less. This thread was on the MS coin, both on mintage/rariety and selling price. In fact, there are no know coins in the MS70 state. However, I would hang on to them and see what happens.
Seriously? You find a U.S. half commemorative about the U.S Army “the equivalent to a Third Reich coin” I would ask you to explain but I don’t want to punish anyone else who would happen to read the post.
