Echo, you are getting close! On your iphone camera, you can set it to 'macro'. Then take the same shots. It appears macro is not on in these photos.
Have you tested the coin with a magnet which is one type of detection for a "Fake" Here is one passed on me
first try a couple other dealers. or you can send in to pcgs and just get it graded genuine (or not)no grade number, for less than usual fee. worth less cleaned but the '28 is still worth some bucks.
You have made the worst mistake on coin talk.Never collect any coin unless after it was sent from the mint on a satin sheet and placed on a velvet pillow inside a bank valt and wiped yearly with a cotton cloth you have junk.BAECAUSE YOU FAILED TO PAY TO HAVE IT CLEANED AND GRADED BY EXPERTS YOU HAVE RUINED A COMMON COIN.You should hide it and never again show it to any coin talk expert.Sorry but to me this is so stupied to hear some down grade a common coin that took a dip in lemon juice.
The 1928 Peace is the key to that series, and if it is real will always carry a premium regardless of condition or whether or not it is was cleaned. TC
A new guy comes here looking for assistance, and this is your helpful answer. Pretty pathetic response, young lad.
I appreciate all the feedback. I will take more pictures ,with the marco feature this afternoon. In the meantime, I tested it against a magnet, it's not attracted~so at least that's good news (I assume). As far as the mint marked "S" That's the million dollar question! The dealer indicated there are surface scratches where the mint mark would be but the "strike" of the coin doesn't indicate there was an indentation. However because the scratches are present he said he wasn't able to positively determine one way or the other. He looked at it for about 20 minutes under a round scope trying to figure it out.
Not sure if you read the whole thread or story but this person is in need of money (hence they are here to find out what they have and what they could likely sell it for to buy food and feed their family), sending a coin off to get graded, draining them another $30 or so dollars probably is out of the question when $30 could buy a substantial amount of groceries to eat off for a few days to a week.
Echo, I hate to say this, but to really get maximum value for this coin it will probably have to be slabbed as authentic. Too many issues with Chinese fakes, and removed mintmarks with these coins for most to want to buy one unless its guaranteed. I would nicely ask a dealer if you could submit this with his coins the next time he sends some in to lower costs. It may cost $15 or $20, but if it comes back genuine it will probably increase what you can sell it for by hundreds. Edit: I agree Rodeoclown, (posted while you were posting), but if its not slabbed, I am not seeing a lot of value unless a knowledgable dealer has it in hand, and she gave it to one and he could not make the call.
If you can't take a clear shot with macro mode on your phone camera, try taking the picture a little further back from the coin, at least then we might get more clearer pictures and we can blow them up a little on our end to get better looks. From what I can tell, the details are still good, I think the question now is, is there a S mint mark or not, because that would make or break the value of this coin, despite the cleaning. If it's not an S mint, even cleaned will bring a premium.
And yeah, if it's real or not. If it was given by a friend or family member who maybe had it in their possession for a long period of time, it increases the likelihood that it's authentic, but you just never know though.
Sorry but this whole thread seems like a troll. Next he'll be telling us he's dying from some incurable disease. Maybe I'm just too cynical.
A troll usually comes to start controversy in existing threads or topics though, not ask for help and actually follow directions from other members, which they have clearly done. To me, I think we've established they're likely not a troll at this point. It doesn't seem like this person is here to start trouble, so the troll red flags are long gone. Perhaps just ignoring the thread is just as easy to do as well.
