Down on my luck my God mother gave me a 1928 Peace Dollar to sell. Stating it was the coveted Philly coin and I could easily get $300 for it I thought it was a great idea to clean it up and bring it to my local coin dealer....I'm not a coin collector so what did I know. Went online looked to see dropping it in some lemon juice for an hour would make it sparkle. Only it brought out the surface scratches hidden under the oxidized gunk. Coin dealer says he can't tell for certain its the real thing..can't rule it out either. I'm thinking the only way to sell it is to figure out for sure what it is. I've read good and bad about graders...Any opinions??

Good thing you didn't find the site that told you to use a brillo pad.

I strongly suspect that the OP and his Peace dollar story is a troll.

Too bad you didn't come here and ask about cleaning your coin before you:

This is absolutely the best tool for getting coin metal to sparkle up again!

Warning: Nope, can't think of any! :rollling:

My tool beats your tool for cleaning coins. It's my handy dandy sand blaster, but it's not portable, but it works like a charm, brings the shine right out of those dirty coins! ;)

It will also remove the face, date and anything else that's in the way if the operator is hitting on an attractive woman and not paying attention.

But you are missing the handle on that one Kasia. How are you supposed to REALLY apply the pressure without a good sturdy handle?

Btw OP, if you are not a troll, NEVER clean a coin if you do not know what you are doing, and if you are serious post a much higher resolution pic of your coin.

Holy Cow! SO many replies...I'm new to this but I'm assuming OP means original poster and a troll I can figure is a bad thing. I honestly came to this site looking for help and advise going forward. I get the make fun of the stupid new girl theme but I think I got the point after the first 5 insults. No I am not a troll. No my story is not fake. I'm just an idiot who didn't know any better. BUT now I know. Dont ever clean coins.
With that in mind, Does anyone have any thoughts on my original question. Try and certify it or chalk it up to nice try but I screwed myself over??
And To Medoraman...I'm not sure how to make the picture (or take the picture) at a higher resolution. But thank you for taking me seriously if only for a moment in passing.

    TO usc96 -
If you notice on the front of the coin, in her hair bun, and on the back by the beginning of "united States" the dark hue. It was that color in patches over 40% of the coin. I put the coin in the juice for less than an hour and this is the result.
PS thanks for the nice reply :)

I am sorry if we thought you were simply teasing here. We get many such posts. The 1928 is the key to the Peace set, so that also made many think it was teasing.

Try to take a picture closer up with the camera with good light, head on. That would help us see what is going on with the coin.

Thank you Shamrock111 I appreciate the hint of sarcasm with the overwhelming rudeness others have dumped me.

OP is original poster. Troll is a bad thing, but don't take it personally to those that pointed it out, sites get them all the time, you're original post indicated a little bit likely. Members were just being cautious.

I don't think anyone was actually directly insulting you and I doubt anyone knew you were a girl, so both actually sort of irrelevant. Don't take words on a screen too personal.

See, you learned something and now we know you're likely not a troll.

Why may I ask are you on a mission to sell it anyways? Why do you want it graded? Are you only wanting to get it graded to get as much money out of it as you can?

Will do medoraman. I appreciate the apology. I really am sincerely just an idiot looking for guidance. I'll take the pictures and post prettier ones asap

I'm sorry if I jumped to conclusions I'm just a little lost. To answer your question rodeo - I was given this coin out of a private collection to sell to help put food on my table for my children. As many in this economy I've been unemployed for over a year and the last of my savings has run out. This was a nice gesture that I have screwed up. I'm very upset with myself for not doing my research before hand and im taking it out on you folks. I took the comments personal because this is personal for me. I'm sorry thats probably TMI I'll go take pictures now.

Hi Echo. Let's move on. What's done is done and it cannot be reversed.

First of all, any coin dealer who cannot discern it from a real one, is not a very good coin dealer.
Next, try and take some close up images of the coin, and more straight on. That would be the best bet to us giving you an opinion on the coin.

If it is real, even though you did some sort of cleaning on it...it is still a valuable coin. see what you can do about better photos, and let's go from there.
    Also, welcome to CoinTalk.

I agree with Greg. You still have a key date coin and it's still worth something. It just joins the other 80% or more of the coins that have been cleaned over the years. Not the end of the world.

So the I-phone takes better pictures than my camera, only upside down. BUT from what I've read the identifying marks for this coin are located on the "E" in Liberty & somewhere in the bun which are easier to see from this view, maybe?
Thanks for taking a look, again.
