    Lincoln Cents Cents not pennies

    3 boxes of cents:
Box 1: 4 wheats and several minor errors, and the usual BU coins.
Box 2: 6 wheats and 1 small lamination, and 2 1969 D's that look like they just came off the press.
Box 3: 7 wheats and 2 minor die clashes.

Not overly exciting but not completely bad, either.

went to pick up my two boxes of halves, and was pumped because of ThomasInVA and VACookey's finds, that maybe i would get some similar boxes, but they had forgotten to order them. :( I guess i'm going to have to change my mood to disappointed. picked up a box of nickels instead, so maybe I'll find a nice V-Nickel or some key date Jeffersons.

So my wife took off with her mother to run some errands. I figured I'd just call some banks and see if they had any half rolls. A bank over by the mall had $170 worth. I hopped into the car and fought the christmas traffic. Boy, was it worth it. My best turn out so far. Two Proofs 74s and 77s and 11 40%. Still haven't found any 90% yet but it's all good.

This weeks totals were not too bad. 19 40%, 2 proofs, 3 roosies, and 3 mercs.

Got 3 rolls today and found a 64 and a 68! Then I got a bunch of star notes and old face notes that a teller holds for me. Then I got a box of nickels for my husband and a box of dimes for myself. I realized they were brinks boxes which I hate! So I was looking through the plastic and didn't see anything. But one coin was black and weird so I decided to pull that out. A 63! and then, I asked my husband for a few rolls of nickels (which I never search through) and found a 42 S! Is that silver?

Even though I didn't find a lot of stuff, I found a few good items and I'm happy. I'd like to bank hop tomorrow but I think I've pretty much tapped out everything in my area this week. What could possibly be left?

Well I was able to score my first two coin machine bags! I purchased a bag of halves and a bag of dimes.

The bag of halves produced eight 40%'ers (two '66, five '67 with one in very good condition and a nice '68). It also produced two mexican diez pesos (2002 & 1993) and a beat up 1997 fifty pence piece.

I did another box of pennies that produced 12 wheaties with a very nice looking '55 d.

I'm now off to go through my bag of dimes. I also have two more boxes of pennies.

    One of those days

I'll start with the fact that I had $500 in halves to dump and another $500 in cash.

I stop at a bank on my way to dump and decide to grab whatever I can in customer wraps....I get:

    $100 in Quarters - Skunk
$150 in Dimes - Turns out she didn't have customer wrapped, but I figured I'd take em anyway...all 2011's. Skunk

I go to a TD Bank to dump that I hit maybe 2-3 times a month as it's near a restaurant where I want to get a Christmas Gift Certificate. I stopped in there last week on Friday night and asked for a box of dimes, but I didn't dump. So, the teller (a young 20-somthing blonde) asks me if I have a business account. I say I used to but I don't anymore. She says that they normally only order boxes for business customers. I said the vault manager had ordered them for me in the past. She offers me $40 that she has in the tray, and I say no thanks. I like to go through boxes. So, then she givess me this funny look and says, are you a collector. I said yes I am. She says that then they definitely can't give me boxes, as it is 'Coin Mining' (I never heard that one before). I say what do you mean by that? She explains that it costs money to order and if I dump there it costs money to run the coins and send them back. I said, ok but I have an account and have had one with them for close to 14 years, and if I do bring coins in it's about 2-3 times a month. I said thanks anyway and just walked out. I was pleasant though.

So, today I'm dumping my $500 in halves in the machine and some young guy in a suit comes over and tells me it's o.k. if I count my change today but I can't use the machine again for halves or large amounts of currency. THat it is for people that want to bring in change from home and things like that. I looked at him with a very blank look and said, ok. Funny though, when I had a vending route and a business account I never had an issue. It's not like I'm doing something illegal. He then babbles on about the coin mining, blah, blah, blah. So, I just sit there and stare at him with a blank look on my face. When he's done and apologizes, I said that's fine if you want to run your branch like that.

I get my money and go get 2 boxes of Halves.

    Box 1: Skunk
    Box 2: 2 x 40%ers

Since I wrapped up work early I go and dump at a bank where they don't hassle me and go pick up 2 more boxes from my weekly order.

    Box 3: Skunk
    Box 4: Skunk

What a hassle today turned out to be.

I am half tempted to go in with about $500 in Halves re-rolled. Take them to the counter and say, I want to deposit them. When they say they can't take them and I should use the machine. I'll say, Oh...I was told I'm not allowed too as it's COIN MINING!

Then I'll go to another branch an hour later and withdraw the money. If there weren't about 8 TD banks within a 20 minute drive I'd be really annoyed, but it's probably not worth wasting any more energy on this band of idiots! I know it was that dumb, young teller. I'd like to tell her when she was poppin pimples, and wearing a training bra I was in there with a business account that ran more money through in a year than she's made in a lifetime. However, it's probably not worth the trouble.

Never argue with a fool...you'll never win!

I'm taking the rest of the weekend off and enjoying the Holiday!

    Merry Christmas too all!

Just finished the bag of dimes. It produced three roosies ('48, '56 and a '63). I also found two canadian dimes, a euro cent and an argentinian centavo.

Hockey, yes they were searched. But don't give up! I've gone through weeks of nothing and then BAM! All kinds of good stuff. You have to take the bad with the good.

How are you people finding bags? I want to search bags so bad but I can't find anybody who will sell them to me.

Call banks ahead of time. Most times you the person that answers will direct you to the person in charge of ordering and they will order one for you. I have three banks in town that call me every time they get halves in. They put them in bags and write my name on them :)

PM me the location, I've got a few dumps with their name on it next week. Once I move to WC, I'll make a few visits there... per week. I've got the name and number of the district manager, so if they feel like giving me any problems, I'll just give him a call... he will set them straight.

    2 boxes of dimes, skunks.

$1k bag of dimes, 4 roosies, 1 merc.

    3 boxes of halves, 2 40%ers.

For me, I started calling around to local banks and asking if they would sell me BAGS in particular. I said I'd open an account with them specifically because of that. I do feel bad making the nice elderly teller lady go get a bag or a box of coins from the vault several times per week, though... :p If I make it clear to them that I will NOT be returning the coins to their bank, and also that I want to be as LITTLE hassle to them as possible, they are happy enough to help me out :) I will sometimes call in the morning, and tell her what I will be picking up that day, so that she can go get it whenever it is convenient to HER, and when I get there I just pick it up, and take no more time than any other customer. I also make small talk, and am a VERY friendly person, so most of my tellers like me personally ;)

Also, it must be noted - locally, it seems to be IMPOSSIBLE to get halves in boxes. I can ONLY get them in $1000 bags.

Whenever a teller or person on the phone at my bank says they "can't do that" for me, I just mention that they CAN, at least in my case, that I have permission (or however I phrase it that day), and buy ALL THE TIME. They might get a funny look on their face or something, but either another teller will back me up, or they will ask the head teller, who will confirm it for me.

Basically, my suggestion is open a NEW account somewhere, and make it CRYSTAL CLEAR from the start that you will be constantly buying coins in both bags and boxes from them, and that is the only way they will get your account. Make sure you have approval before opening it. And get on a first name basis with as many of the tellers there as possible. It's all about the relationship and attitude. Call ahead to make sure they are not busy when you want to arrive, as well. One last note - don't leave the account at like $0.05 all the time... lol. I try to carry a constant $100 balance in my account with them, so they don't feel I am a waste of their time and resources.

So, today I went and dumped $977 of yesterdays $1k bag of halves, then I went back to my supply bank and bought the 2nd bag of halves they got for me this week. When they brought it out, I couldn't help myself... I broke out laughing! :p Every other time I have gotten a bag of coins, it has been one of those plastic bags from a counting machine, even when they order them. Today, however, it was a cloth sack - the only thing missing was a giant green $ on the front, and I'd have looked like Yosemite Sam robbing a bank! Lolol... I love it <3 It looked EXACTLY like those cartoon bags of money
    Picture 003.jpg
They also asked me if I would be interested in $33.50 of mixed dollars and halves they've been unable to get rid of for a while. I said sure, thinking what the heck, maybe I will get lucky... lol. Nope, all clad, but taking them off their hands made them happy, so it's still in the "plus" column in my opinion <3

When I opened the big bag, I started doing a quick preliminary edge-search, and started to feel disappointed... I figured it was gonna be a skunk. Shows what I know... lol.

    1x 90% '64
    5x 40% (forget the dates)
    1x '72s proof
    7x '71d DDR

None of the silver looked too great, but they weren't damaged, and I am happy with the day's work :) Before work tonight, I managed to get $750 ready to dump so far, but still have to loupe the other $250, as they are possible variety dates.

Question - am I the only person who bothers to loupe halves? It seems there are quite a few errors/varieties available in clad halves, that carry at least a SMALL premium. I am thinking of taking DDO and DDR halves to local coin shops, and offering to swap them 1-for-1 for 90% silver halves, or something. Who knows - they may accept ;)

On a related note - I am trying to set up a standing order with my bank for 2 $1000 bags every week. I have a good feeling they may do this for me :)

Dumped there once while I was roadtripping through your area before you were into it. They didn't enjoy it very much. Got a feeling they just need someone who isn't afraid to tell them what's up going in there. Sometimes, you just gotta be a "Richard".
