Just wanted to share these two. They came with a solid provenance and both were found by Mendel Peterson of the Smithsonian (A little about him: http://siarchives.si.edu/collection...22&page=2&perpage=10&sort=relevancy&view=list) He described them only as being from a shallow water shipwreck off the coast of Port-Au-Paix, Haiti. One coin has a single mark, the other has a blundered mark punched three times. The mark looks somewhat similar to the series of 1884 Puerto Rico countermark, but there are some differences and both of my coins are from the 1890's.
I wish I knew more about these foreign counterstamps Numismat but I never had an interest in them...until now. Thanks for posting them. Bruce
neat! This is one that interests me. Are these two pieces yours? Or did I (as usual) misunderstand the OP.
I wasn't even aware of this reference. Thanks again Doug! Edit: Is it the "World Dollars" book? I can't seem to find anything by this author that's just about countermarks. Yup, purchased them recently. Glad you found them interesting. =)
Yes that's it. Get the 2nd edition if you can find it. There are actually 3. 1 was printed in 1974. 2 was printed in 1975. 3 was printed in 1980. The one you want is #2. The title is World Dollars 1477-1877 Pictorial Guide - by Lee M. Bachtell. It includes cobs, cut, counter stamp, klippe and siege coins.
Wow, that's 5-in-1. I don't have a reference for any of those other things either. Found a couple for $70-$75. The price alone tells me it's a good reference. Thanks again for your help. =)
