i too have a set that has damage i did not realize for quite some time as its just on the front seam of the box so i only looked at the top and the coins when it arrived. i called the mint after i realized the problem with the box but they could not locate a new box for me. any ideas or location of a new box?? what has this done to the values of the set does anybody know? thanks
what is this box too? is it a mint set, proof set, silver eagle set. Please be more descriptive or post a picture
its a 8-8-08 prosperity set which it seems like alot of folks are having problems with the boxes being defective maybe ill call the mint again and see if they are willing to do anything about this problem because i think it can adversely affect the value of the set! or if anyone else has called them let us know.
If you plan to sell it, it could with a picky buyer. I buy the coins, not the cases or presentation cases they come in. If it went unnoticed with you for quite sometime, it likely wouldn't bother me as a buyer, as long as I was told up front. If you are never going to sell it and it's not really noticeable unless you really examine, I'd say don't worry about it. Now if the Mint can locate one for you, that's cool. You bought something and should expect perfection since you likely paid a premium for not only the coins but the case it came in.
As stated, you can find listings on eBay for OGP boxes for just about everything for a couple of bucks. You should check there and see what you find.
You know though, if it came damaged from the Mint though, they should be obligated to replace for free. From what I recall, these weren't your normal felt lined box, these were actual wood cases.
A quick search on eBay resulted in only two found, that included the coins, both going for more than 2k.
thanks not sure if i will sell i just dont like the hassle if i do. it just bothers me when your sold something and it doesn't last even when you take such good care of your stuff. oh well i'll check e bay. thanks
yeah i tried that but since i didn't realize for so long they couldn't replace it. i do wonder if they realized it though? they should have made some new ones for all of us that got bad boxes.
If it's the wooden box that Rodeo posted a pic of the Mint wouldn't have their vendor make extra ones for any reason. The Mint doesn't make the packaging for any of their products. They contract that to private vendors who produce them. The Mint decides they're only making 350,000 proof sets, they order 350,000 lenses, boxes, and COAs, nothing extra. Since these are made of wood, and felt lined, if the Mint had ordered extra boxes in case a customer complained of the poor condition the box is in when received, and then never had to use them, they're stuck with them. The same would be true of this set.
They probably did have a small stockpile back when they were made, but that was three years ago. They didn't produce a lot of these and once the thirty day return period was past they probably disposed of the surplus supplies.
i hear ya i guess im s.o.l. live and learn next time i'll make sure i check it out just like when i got my ultra high reliefs those were real nice boxes!
I don't know how severe the damage is, but if you are a perfectionist like I am, a furnitue repairman or cabinet maker would be the best and fastest way to get it original again. I had a display box custom made for about $100 for some coins. I would hope to repair it would be much less.
yeah thanks i thought of having a new one made but wasn't sure if i ever sold it that would really effect the value or not besides if it was me i would want the original box. as a gun collector the box is always a big part of the value sometimes but im no expert when it comes to the coin collecting.thanks for the advice.
hey there everybody happy new years!! i was wondering if anybody can share some information on having coins graded i have never had any graded and was wondering if this really helps the values or what? thanks
A lot will depend on the following: Denomination Date minted Mint where struck Varieties Rareties If modern, will it grade higher than 67 PCGS and NGC are the top two reliable and reputable grading services. The only way it will help the value is the grade would be certified as opposed to raw.
