Cherrypicker's Guide, 5th Edition

Does anyone know when Whitman plans to release Volume II of the CPG 5th Edition? I've had the Volume I for a long time, and I would sure like to get it.

The 5th Edition Volume I has been out for more than a year. It's Volume II of the 5th Edition that everyone is waiting to get.

And the word is..."We're working on it." No estimated date as of right now.

Got there kinda late and left early so I didn't get a chance to ask specifically about Mr. Stanton, but I assume all is well since they're working on the new addition currently.

 

Cherrypickers 5th ed question

Hello all, first post here. I read through the FAQ and didn't see this anywhere, so I hope I'm not asking a common question.

Does anyone know of a repository related to history and changes to the Cherrypickers' Guides?

For example, 4th Ed. Vol I lists two varieties of 1916 buffalo nickels:
101 (016) - DDO, and 401 (016.3) - No F

The index in 4th Ed. Vol II lists out more varieties:
101 - DDO, 401 - No F, 402 - 2 Feathers, 403 - No F and 2 Feathers combined.

5th Ed. Vol I no longer lists the 402 and 403 varieties (photo or index).

Struck me as odd since this isn't a debatable over-mintmark and I hoped to find out more as to why it was delisted. I picked up a really nice 403, but I'm guessing PCGS and ANACS won't attribute the variety now that it isn't listed any more?

I too have been waiting forever for this book to come out and have held off buying the 4th edition of Vol. II for around 2 years now waiting for the new one!!! hahaha..

Anyways, it will be out by the end of 2011. The finishing touches are currently being made according to the folks at Whitman Publishing as posted by them over on Collectors Universe a couple of weeks ago:

Possibly because they are die states and not varieties. Frankly I would probably consider the no F to be a die state as well. The F would have been in the die when it was created and then chipped off.

 

Interesting. I've never thought of it from that perspective before. Would you consider all the 3 and 3 1/2 legged buffalo nickels the same way?

Yes I do. The dies started out normal but later in the life of the dies they were polished to the extent that some of the design details were polished away. Those coins with the missing details are just late die states.

 

Appreciate your insight, Conder. I can see how that can provide distinction between coin varieties, but (perhaps selfishly) I'm glad that they have been historically validated as collectibles by being included in red books/cherrypickers/etc... I can only assume that many coin collectors were started after finding a 3 legger in their change in the 50s or getting one from their grandparent.

 

Cherrypickers guide Fifth Edition Vol II

I just received the Fifth Edition Vol II and all it has in it is Half Dimes to Silver and Modern Dollars, Plus Gold Coins, Commemoratives and Bullion it does not have lincolns or nickles in it.

 

You would want the 5th edition Volume 1 for half cents - nickels.

 

Vol. I would have the info you're looking for. Just got my fifth edition too.
