Couldn't find this one in Brunk. Not sure if Rulau lists it, as I don't have that reference. All I know is that it's stamped on an 8 reales and O.G.D N.Y. seems to stand for Ogdensburg, NY near the Canadian border. Any help is greatly appreciated! =)
It's not in Rulau either Numismat. I haven't seen this stamp before, but it was struck long after the coin was minted. It looks 1860's/70's by the style. I do agree with you on the location...O.G.D. probably stands for Ogdensburg, but it could indicate something else. Bruce
Thanks for the confirmation and probable age range Bruce. I was hoping it was a merchant stamp for the added value. May just have been a personal keepsake if neither Brunk nor Rulau knew about it.
It may be a merchant stamp Numismat, but probably not. "O.G.D" could be the initials of a company or organization in NY. Just because It's not in Brunk doesn't mean anything in that regard. Brunk lists 15 or 20,000 ctsps. in his database, but there's probably at least that many more undocumented. I've provided pictures or descriptions of probably 500 or more new ones to him over the years. If you don't mind, I'll make a copy of your pic and send it to him so it will be in the next edition of his book. Bruce
