Just got back a CD with super high resolution photos of coins that I had Todd of BluCC take. I love his hi-res photos as you can really see what is going on with a coin. As I was looking at the pics, I noticed that this Walker is missing the designer's initials...."AW". My first Walker variety.
My 2cents :thumb:Very nice 1945-S Walker & No AW+++!! a No AW great Die variety add $$$ but just what a buyer is willing to pay today. ***The Bad economy has made it harder to sell any DV But I sold an Au 1945-P no AW 2 years ago for $450 or 500.00.your being a MS-65 should make your worth a hole lot more
Thanks for the info. I hadn't taken the time to look it up in the CPG. From what I hear, there's a newly updated CPG hitting the streets soon so I'll see if it's in there. I didn't notice that it was a non-AW variety when I bought. Just fell in love with the toning and new I had to have it.
Don't hold your breath on the 5th Edition, Volume II coming out any time soon. Whitman Publishing has been making that claim for the last two years. That last official statement that supposedly came from a source at Whitman was that it was supposed to be released December 6. Yeah! Right! Chris
Yeah? Well, I pre-ordered it the first week of September and I haven't received it or any acknowledgement that it will be shipped. Chris
It is not in the new Cherrypicker Guide, which I have in front of me. However, it is listen in Fox's A Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars". Listed as -- V-104, No AW, no previous listing. Chris: Nice........ Yeah Right! How about looking http://www.whitman.com/Inventory/De...e-to-Rare-Die-Varieties-5th-edition-volume-II Also, see above, I have a copy so it exists.
I'd check your preorder then, they are out, I haven't gotten one yet, but I've read lots of reviews on another forum.
That figures. I guess they are just trying to avoid sending it with free shipping like promised. Either that, or their right cheek doesn't know what the left cheek is doing. Chris
I'll have to get that book... "However, it is listen in Fox's A Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars". Listed as -- V-104, No AW, no previous listing. " I'll have to get this book. I have "Collecting & Investing Strategies for Walking Liberty Half Dollars" by Jeff Ambio and "Treasure Hunting Walking Liberty Half Dollars" by Kevin Flynn. Neither one mention this as a variety. I'm still thinking it might just be a real weak strike.
It would have to be a REALLY weak strike for the AW not to show for that reason. In fact nothing else would show either. the AW is incuse on the coin. This means the initials are raised on the die and on the field which is the high part of the die. This means that during the strike the very first part of the die that makes contact with the planchet is the designers initials. Since they are the highest part of the die though it means they are likely to get chipped off or ground off during polishing of the die.
What Condor said. The only other choice would be if it (the die) had grease in that spot-- very carefully placed grease. Not likely
Grease wouldn't do it. Once again think about the die. On the die the AW is RAISED, not a depression you can fill with grease. You would have to have a hardened LUMP of crud that the AW was hidden inside of. But that would mean a raised lump on the die and a depression in the resulting coin. There is no depression here just smooth level field.
