Well my 9 year old has old coins down on her list. So I got the following for her. 1845 Lg Cent, 2 Colonial coppers ( nothing special), 1867 3 Cent Nick, 1857 3 Cent Silver, 3 Barber dimes, 2 Barber quaters, 45 Micro S Merc, Walking Half, 1982 Penny set copper and zink. Washington Proof from the 80's I forget. 1955 Poor man Double (ms-63). 2 Seated dimes (years I forget). Everything is VF and better except the colonials. Oh yea a roman coin too.
Sounds like a nice mix from ancient to modern and in between. I bet she'll be thrilled with your selections.
Yeah, I think a ton of CT members, especially younger ones, are drooling over the prospect of getting adopted by you. Just make sure you teach her how to take care of them and keep them safe. Chris
I had an old safe that I gave her. Mine got to small. I do things like you can have this coin if you tell me the grade and why. It's never a great coin, unless is a special day or something.
I truly am looking forward to doing the same with my son. I sure hope he likes coins, cause daddy has a LOT.
I think that is a great set of coins. I don't even have a 3c silver! If not now, in the future she sure will be happy they weren't a roll of wheat cents.
Heh, my father had two sons to choose from. He told me later, he chose me because he'd give me and my brother each a 50 cent kennedy, my brother would go spend his on candy immediately, I saved mine. He knew just from our actions who would get the coin collection.
Nice coins to give as gifts, especially to a youngster. And man, I don't even have some of those coins you listed.
a little update I just picked up a 1835 bust 10C. for 3.25 free ship it has a little hole but I'm sure she will like it. Also added a 1926D Standing 25C.
I wish I would have gotten such a gift for X- mas! If anything try to keep them at home. When I was in 3rd grade me and a few friends collected coins. My folks didn't let me take them to school. I wasn't too fond of that idea at the time, but now I still have some of those coins, which can't be said for some of my numismatic friends, who ended up losing several in the schoolyard and in the classroom. Some of them were trying their best not to bawl their eyes out when they reached into their pocket to discover a hole, no coins, or worse, nothing at all.
Great presents! and Congrats on having a very smart daughter, all my kids want is video games and all that other junk!
Instead of buying average coins, why not buy better quality so that if she ever wants to sell them she can get more for them...btw cool gifts, highly jealous.
Personally I would do it the way the OP is. His daughter has 70 years to worry about being a condition snob, I think to a 9 year old a lot of old, unusual coins beats out 1 or two higher grade old, unusual coins. Chris
Definitely don't buy high grade coins for kids. Kids will be kids and will play with them. Possibly damaging them or even worse, lose them. Let them touch, play and study them. When they get older they will decide if they want to pursue the hobby more.
