Nice.. I love Samples.. Not sure why but most of my samples have toned more than other slabbed items...

Raider, that is truly an interesting one. I have never seen a centennial sample slab before. Obviously given away at the 1991 ANA centennial convention in Chicago.

Sarcasm, or are you serious?
... I've seen those go for $80-$100 on eBay in past months.

I think by "a couple of bucks" he meant "It wasn't cheap." Of course it he bought it awhile back it might have been just a couple of bucks. I think I paid about $5 for mine but that was maybe a decade ago.

No, it wasn't cheap but a little cheaper than most since there's a crack in the outer shell. It's not cracked completely through though which is a plus. Looking at my records, I show that I paid $81.78 total for it.

Sample Slabs and Doilies is actually something I literally got sucked into by participating on Coin Forums. Otherwise, I'd have never ever considered paying $80+ for something that was given out for free. I guess I'm a victim of my own mental disorders! (Aren't we a "funny" lot?)

Hopefully, some "super hoard" of them won't be discovered in some estate find and the price will stick!

I personally think that the real value in these sample slabs comes from folks like conder101 and the late Cameron Kiefer since these folks have taken the time to research the historical significance of these pieces.

Hmmmph. Come to think of it........most of what I do do is because of Coin Forums which actually have proven to be informative, educational, and profitable!

Who would have thought sample slabs would have been a good investment back then. $5 to $81, an 1800% return on investment in 10 years. Or about 34% compounded per annum.

I've got a couple of Roosies in sample slabs.
I pick them up on my next visit to the SDB and post pictures here.

I picked up an NGC sample slab many years ago. After reading posts in this thread, it leads me to believe it is a NGC 1. The info on the slab is as follows:
    1959 10C
    SAMPLE
    PF 65 NGC
    191578-23
Would this be a common slab or maybe one of the first samples out of NGC? Thanks for any info that might shed some light. Terri

    Hi Terri
I believe this is the sample you are asking about.
It is one of the early NGC samples, but the first one did not have PF 65.
Even though the are both have the same 191578 serial number.
You may want to look at sampleslabs.com. where it is listed as sample 1.7

It can still be found on ebay, but as the hobby grows it may start to become harder to find.
Are you starting to collect samples? I hope this helps.
    All the best

Hi there, Alan! Thanks for taking the time to enlighten me of something that gets more confusing the more you learn about it.....I guess because of the serial number. I'm not a collector of sample slabs. I just happened to notice one up for auction on eBay offered by a coin dealer in New Jersey. I had never heard of and had no knowledge about sample slabs. But I did recognize the possible historical significance of these in the future. It never occurred to me that they have already become collectible. Thank you again for providing so much information.
