I'm kind of new to coin collecting and I have bought a few washington no edger errors on ebay and I would like to know has there ever been any other errors like this in the history of the US where something so significant totally missed one of the phases of production? I heard about the 1955 double die penny and to me that doesn't seem like a big deal compared to the mint totally forgetting to put the year and words on a coin. I also read about the 1937 Buffallo nickel that was apparently a die messup, but once again this doesn't seem like that big of a deal compared to these presidential dollars. Is it realistic to expect that these could be selling for thousands within a few years? I see that the 1955 double die and the 1937 Buffalos sell for that much, but i don't know how many are out there compared to these Washington dollars .

There are biger errors from the mint. Like forgetting to put anything on the "coin", or releasing a planchet into circulation. Cent planchets can be found for cheap. I've got a couple. Washington Dollar planchets can be found on eBay for a couple hundred dollars. These smooth edged no lettering coins will more than likely come done in price a little as over 100,000 were released into circulation. I paid $170 for a PCGS MS65 one. I think that I paid a bit much for the coin.

Actually "Golden Dollar" planchets can be found.

A true Washington Dollar planchet, lacking the edge lettering as well as the obverse/reverse designs, cannot be distinguished from a SAC planchet, or the planchet from the Adams and subsequent DeadPrez coins. [IMG]

No, I think they are going to make a nice set when they have issued them all. I just don't want Nixon on them.

There is really no way to know for sure that the mint did totally forget---the machine might have been jammed and the coins really might have gone through and missed the edge lettering.

Coins such as the 55/55 cent and the 3 legged Buff will be worth much more in the long run then these pieces ever will think about being.

I would be careful about buying the "no edge errors" from anywhere.

More likely than not, the edge lettering was removed post mint by scammers to attempt to dupe unknowledgeable people into thinking they have a rare error from the Mint.

The edge lettering on the dollar coins is a separate process from the coins being struck. It wasn't long after the Washington dollars were released, that these so called edge errors started popping up. Most of the scams were that the lettering was upside down on the coins, which the Mint dissuaded as a falsehood as they do not intentionally orient the coins into the machine that does the edge lettering with regards to heads being up or down. It's a random occurance and the lettering can be either way.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

Actually, the 55 Doubled Die and the 37 Buff are considered varieties rather than errors although there are some people who might disagree that the Buff should be considered a variety.

You have to realize that the edge lettering process is a separate stage in production which is supposed to take place after the coin has been struck. However, if some Mint employee accidentally bypassed the edge lettering machine with a bin full of these "unfinished" coins, tens of thousands would go into circulation without the lettering.

There are many errors that are much scarcer than the Prez dollars missing the edge lettering. I have a 2001-D Kennedy half dollar that is missing the reverse clad layer, and it is one of only two known to exist for that date/mm.

I also have a 2005-S KS Silver PF SQ that has a die gouge on the hind quarters of the buffalo. It is one of only 12 known to exist. It was bad enough that no one at the Mint noticed that the die had been damaged BEFORE the frost was applied, but you would think that none of these coins should have escaped undetected from the Mint because each of the proof coins are processed by hand.

Chris, you've piqued my curiosity. How is the frost applied? I always thought it was in the dies.

There won't be an Obama dollar unless Carter, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama all die within the next two years or so.

It is, the original comment was about how no one noticed the deep die gouge before they frosted the die.

It is in the dies. He wasn't saying that it was not. Read his comment again.

And yes, it used to be done by sandblasting. But today the frost effect is created on the dies by a laser.
