I can't really make that out from the pics. It's hard to tell if there is a whole sunken in area or just a standalone trench. If it's possible to get a pic of the whole Lincoln side without bright flash, that would help.

go to the bank and get you a roll of cents and mostlikey you will find one with the sunken design , this is usually on both sides of Lincoln and some are severe.

Well, I do look at my pennies.

Haven't seen one like that yet, but I'm also guessing it can't be that common. Pretty sure a warped die would get noticed and replaced before a whole lot of coins were struck.

one would think the mint workers would have better quality control but I guess they didn't care. these are common for a lot of different dates after the mint went to the zinc coins.the zinc appears to be a much harder metal than copper and may be what caused this, I just don't know what happened for sure. I'm getting wore out so i'm calling it a day. talk to you later hopefully.

Copper is both harder and denser than zinc.

That is NOT a DDO, sorry. I honestly have found hundreds of MDs like yours. I just toss them back in rolls to dump so I can get more boxes of cents. It's not only common with the 88s and 89s, but the 93s, 94s and 95s. At least that where I seem to see the most of them.

One place to check your cents against all the known die varieties (or those that have been discovered) is www.coppercoins.com

    Good luck searching !!

I have a feeling the laminated planchet causes most of it. I have a few that the mint mark is actually punched up again in a different location as somehow air or something is moved around under the lamination. But the "doubling effect" the OP has is pretty common. It comes up with some in every box it seems.

Toaster, yours might have a chance of being a DDO...at least to me. It's hard to tell from the picture though I do see the separating and the doubling isn't flat so I am trying to rule out MD. Also it could be a nick making it appear to be a form of doubling (I dont want to misguide you). Hope others will chime in

you are correct , your 89 coin is a DDO but the other coin in this thread is not. I was throwing these 89 cent coins back in the junk pile until I started finding a lot of them and they were all identical and this is what got me into checking them out. coins from a real doubled coin die is identical to each other and the mechanical doubled ones usually will be a tiny bit different .
