Guess the Grade

We haven't had a round of "Guess the Grade" for some time, and I think I have an interesting note for a round of "Guess the Grade" - What do you think the note below would grade?

I'm going to say 66PPQ. Centering is nice, and the colors are bold. There is however a slight counter clockwise printing on the face that I think would hold it back from getting a higher grade.

 

On the front of the note, the top border is slightly larger than the bottom border. Here is an overlay:

LOL!!! I swear to everything holy, I was going to add "or CEC(Calls everything Choice) 70" at the end of my post.
I figured it would be a safe bet LOL...

Realistically would you say 64PPQ cause of the border issue? or assuming the grader didn't bring a ruler that day, a 66PPQ only cause of the slight cant?

Hmmm I should send my 1918 D2 FRBN over to CEC? I figure XF-45 if I slip em a couple extra bucks for the grade! I just hope I get my note back LOL

 

Oh BTW: I decided to run over to EBAY and get some good chuckles at some CEC-70 Perfect New on my Friday night! WTH something to do!

It's a GL star LOL I think I have 4 or 5 of those in choice! Hardly rare... The guys want $75 bucks for it!!! I think I paid $14 each for mine - raw.

I wonder if the "70" is because of he TPG company, or if you beleive that the note should actually achieve that grade. Thoughts Clay?

 

I don't think it would grade a "70" with any other Third Party Grader.

 

My thoughts as well. Too bad that this company did that when they were in their heyday. It still is a nice note, just not Gem 70 worthy.

 

I'd like to toss out a question on this "guess the grade" discussion. Currently, PMG and PCGS have published grading specs which were originally based on the Sheldon numerical 1-70 scale, use words like "uncirculated" etc, but are not the same in the descriptions of the grade. For example, look at a 55 from PMG:

and a 55 from PCGS:

for 55, PMG will allow 2 pressed folds, whereas PCGS will only allow 2 "bends" that do not break the paper surface. Those are *very* different conditions.

And then add in to the discussion IBNS, which defines the standard grading for non-US notes, their grade of AU is:

As usual, IBNS grading is tighter than the US/TPG grades, in this case allowing only one bend as opposed to PCGS's two bends.

All this to say, doesn't a thread "Guess the grade?" or more generally any discussion of "what grade is this" deserve an immediate response of "according to who's grading scale?". With tongue in cheek, I could say that CEC's grades of 70 are completely accurate, *according to their (unpublished) grading scale*, yes?

Just some thoughts for discussion, I suppose.

Dave, you are absolutely correct. I think the subject of "who's grading scale" came up last time we were guessing the grade.

 

Yes, some poor soul did. I believe the poor soul wanted to see a CEC Grade 70 note in person.

 

+1. We discussed that last time and I believe all are in consensus that it's based upon the TPG when it comes to grading scale.

 

Ah, maybe I've had some brain fade - too much eggnog this time of year

Next time I'll ask "who's grading standard?" on one of these threads and see what happens. If the answer is "CEC" we'll all know.

The Sheldon Scale is so old-school. I'm thinking about the new and improved Clay Scale. Here's my 72 Better Than Perfect ESQ (Extra Special Quality).

I've seen them CEC holders around but I always thought the company was literally a joke, like seriously. I thought it was like a prank company or somthing. But some posts here are leading me to believe otherwise. Anybody want to share their story of these oftenly laughed at 70 CEC holders??
