I've been going through boxes of pennies trying to fill up a coffee can of wheat cents a year. I found my first Indian head after going through 9 boxes it was a 1871 I'll try and post a picture tonight.
It's certainly getting harder nowadays. I've found a handful in my lifetime, but it's been quite awhile since the last find in loose change out in circulation lala land.
ive found 9 since i started collecting (since 2001) i found 2 in a till at work and the rest were from roll searching. they are very hard to find these days. ive never found one from the 1870s however! congrats!! cody
Wow....an 1871 is a rare date. Its the 4th lowest mintage in the series, with the only dates with lower mintages being 1877, 1908s and 1909s. Even in G4 condition, you are looking at over $50. That is a heck of a roll find. You should check for the "shallow N" variety on the reverse. An estimated 1% of the coins (40,000 or so) minted in 1871 had the shallow N, which makes it one of the most elusive varieties in the series. Post a picture if you can!! We all want to see your newly found treasure!
