Merry Christmas everybody, This is driving me crazy. I can see an s underneath the s. It's the same shape as the s on top. Wexler has the 68s in there and I'm looking at so many of the pictures I can't determine if it's there. I looked on variety Vista but they don't have as much info as wexler. Isn't there one site you can go to instead of many different ones. Seems they don't all agree on the same thing. I think that's what's confusing me. I'm looking at the rest of the coin too was trying to find doubling but I got aggravated, so I came out here. Can I get some help on this, whoop whoop. Thanks and stay safe
Start by matching the MM position. If it doesn't match then it is not the RPM. It looks like there's a ton of die deterioration, so without looking at any other websites I'd say it is Die chips. It doesn't match any positions on VV.
It's strike doubling. The '68-S is notorious for that. Note the date is also "doubled," that's the give-away.
How many different resources are there? do you check everyone? Or is one more reliable than the other?
It’s just a normal 1968-S cent to me. It looks like the ones I have. The die was worn and they kept minting them. The mintage is on the low side.
Not really sure how many are out there but I usually just use Wexler's site for everything but nickels as he does not do nickels, and Brian Ribar's site for nickels. There is also www.maddieclashes I use for die clashes.
Experts only put their attributions on coins that they have personally examined. And the experts that log a new variety have put their eyes on more than one example to verify that there is a die match, not just the doubling but a confirming die marker. When I started learning varieties We didn't have pictures just a description. If you wanted to confirm it you had to go find another example, or go buy a book. We are lucky in this day and age to have valuable resources at the touch of our fingertips. I say bookmark everyone that you see here on CT, because they are all good.
I have bookmarked the sites. And I had trouble with one of them cuz I couldn't maneuver around it. Now I forgot which one it was. When it's time goes by and I get comfortable looking at the sites, I'm sure I'll have my own preference. Never too old to learn. Thanks much
