Coin holders

I gree with GDJMSP. All my coins, medals and tokens are in airtites or were purchased slabbed. This includes the ones in the bank safe deposit box as well as the ones at home. Even my paper currency is all double sleeved or in TPG holders. I am speaking about collectables here, not hoarder coins. If you think enough about the coin to collect it, think enough about the coin to preserve it.

Do Whitman pages have PVC?

 

Myself I use non-pvc plastic flips, and store them in either pages or boxes. Boxes for the coins I am more archiving than actively collecting, and pages in binders for the more active collections. I find having 2 sides of the flips to write on very useful, but then again I am into ancients and we usually record more details about a coin than US collectors do. We also like to take them out more than US collectors, so 2x2's don't work well.

P.S. Plus, for ancient coins, many airtite sizes are either too thick or too thin for an ancient coin. They are much more variable than struck coins in thickness, so all of my greek and Central Asian issues simply either don't fit or rattle around too much inside them. There are reasons Doug that not all "serious collectors" use air-tites.

 

I put all of my coins in 2x2 mylar flips or in plastic rolls(except my copper cents those are in paper rolls). I have a binder for cents,nickels, dimes, quarters and halves. I put all of my doubles into boxes that are for 2x2s and I put all modern coins into littleton folders. I organize the folders to allow a spot for every year and mint mark so I have room and don't need to redo it every time I add something. I buy the pages for about 50 cents a piece and each page holds 20 2x2s. I prefer the 11/2" binders or the 2".

 

I order my airtites from valleycoin.com, seems to have the best prices I've seen. Direct fit airtites go for about .39 cents each, the other types with rings (which I prefer) are about .52 cents a piece. Most other sites I've come across sell these at a dollar or more each.

For the lower grade or non-special coins I just want general protection for, I'll throw them in the cardboard 2x2's and put them in the binder pages that hold about 20 per page.

 

I go with http://www.bcwsupplies.com for the non PVC pages. You can tell the difference with the prices for the most part but then again, I don't put coins in these sleeves all by themselves unless they're already in a 2x2 holder that protects them.

I found a nice wooden box that will hold 20 Slabbs. Then I have a 3 ring binder, but no 2x2's yet!! For junk coins, or randoms I use crown royal bags, and then for loose notes I use an old baggammon case with a felt inside. Just me though.

 

I use 2x2's too. But for my Eisenhower dollars I used 2.5 x 2.5's. This led to a problem of them falling out of the Polypropylene pages I was using. I thought that Airtites would work better. UH UH they're still too small for the 9 pocket BCW pages. After much thinking, I decided to use an empty 2.5x2.5 in a pocket with the airtite Eisenhower dollar on top of it. Viola! This works really well. I'm almost done but am 7 2.5x2.5's short. No shops around here carry these extra large dollar flips. I went to reorder them and noticed square polypropylene Snap-On holders. They're 1/4" thick so I'm not 100% positive these will work in 2x2 pock pages. If they fit properly and really snug then that's the way I'll go.

I use, almost exclusively, 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 staple-type holders to use with pages and binders. This gives you 30 coins to a page, which I need because I have so many coins ... I am a hoarder of Canadian Victoria Large Cents. With 4-5 thousand of them, the extra 10 coins per page (vice 2X2's) makes a huge difference. If you live in the States, you will find no better selection or price than from Brooklyn Gallery in the post about .. by FAR the cheapest and most selection.
