PMD actually means damage that was inflicted on a coin after the strike. This coin may have been damaged while at the mint but I am almost 100% certain it ocurred after the strike.
In referring to post #16 that I authored now every darn one of you knows that I was just bragging on the other posters post , also you know I was not talking about anything that was said in this op's thread we are on right now ....I said pretty much the same thing as everyone else about his coin. I also said I hope to God that you all could learn from this posters post and looks like none of you even read what they wrote.go ahead and keep on with your usual doings and eventually you will get your wish and this CT forum may come crashing down like you seem to be trying to do. If there was one person in your group that cared anything about your group or the CT forum then you would not be doing what you are doing ,, hey Hobo I thought we could be friends but looks like you are joining the bandwagon . I hope you didn't get mad just because I was joking and said I outdrew you , surely you knew it was a joke , I even put LOL at the end of it. If you are this sensitive then we would never get along anyway because I like to joke and kid around.. all of you in your little try to get rid of the new comer's group can keep on giving it to me all you want to with my full blessing . just go ahead and dish it out to me in full force if you want , i"m a tough old rascal and can handle it . all you are ever going to accomplish is to hurt the CT forum and yourself's . IMO none of you like coins and only have one misson and that is to destroy this CT forum in any way you can. That is easy for any grown up person to see. If I'm wrong then I think you all may have some other bad issues like say jealousy for example. for all of you that keeps asking how many accounts I have on here I would love to know how many accounts you have. I only have this one and the MOD'S knows this is true. I'm about ready to resign from the account I do have but that would be just what you all wants me to do , which is exactly like you have already already done lots of new comers before.. I have never seen such a weird bunch of creatures in all of my 60 years of life as this forum has. Some of you managed to drag me down to your level there for a while by me trying to talk back to you like when you was talking bad to me as if I was a dog , I should have known better than to be drug down to that level that much. It will never happen again
It may have been found in a mint bag in 1943, but it clearly happened after the coin was struck which makes it PMD no matter where the coin was when it happened. Sorry.
This coin could not have come out of the press in this condition. Where the damage to this coin occurred is irrelevant and impossible to prove. How the damage occurred is debatable. In my opinion, this coin was bent over using hand tools of some sort. Possibly a bench vice and a pair of pliers. There was also an attempt made to bend it back to straight. There are stress marks on this coin indicating this. I also agree that the mint never rolled business strike coins, but shipped them in bags to be rolled outside of the mint. No one has yet asked what was printed on the paper roll that might indicate it was mint issued?
PMD (Post Mint Damage) could be better described as PMD (Post Minting Damage) or PSD (Post Strike Damage).
Another point is that damage that happens at the mint after a coin is struck and once it leaves the coining press is still considered PMD. PMD is one of those terms that can confuse. It should really be called post strike damage. edit: I guess I should have read page two before posting.
This is definitely post-strike damage, specifically impact damage. The coin was also re-plated before or after the damage was inflicted.
Welcome to CT! Sorry to say, the coin was damaged after it was minted and, worse yet, it was replated. Keep on lookin! Good Luck
Damage that happens to any coin after it leaves the stamping machine is PMD. since the coins are handled by machines, they can and do get damaged by them. It never needed to be circulated to get damaged. Heck even Proofs aren't all perfect. a single nick drops the grade down a bunch.
Who found it? Did you open the roll? Do you have the other 49 steelies from this roll? If it really was a "mint issued roll" it would contain only 1943's. Do you still have the wrapper? If you do, please post a photo of it. How would a mint issued roll of '43's hang around a bank, unopened, for that many years? I really don't know how this got into a roll unless the roll was hand packed. This coin would have been kicked out by, or jammed, an automatic counting machine.
if you need any more "conversation pieces", let me know. I can make all of them that you want. This coin is no more original to the Mint than I am. The coin has PMD which you tried to diffuse from your first sentence. Like it or not, it's damaged, and if you like it, then keep it for a conversation piece, but your story is not enough to pursuade the coin collecting community that this coin is anything more than altered. If you enjoy the coin, then enjoy. If you want to sell it and get anything above 2¢ for it, then I bid you good luck
This post is totally unbelievable or maybe not on second thought because I think I have seen many more posts like this , why so many question to the OP of this thread? all of your information is there right on post #1 of this very thread if you would read before asking such weird questions..
perhaps the questions come from the fact that no one can understand how a bent and replated coin got back to the mint to end up in a non existant "mint roll"?
I'm so sorry that we have offended you again, Rascal. What we really should have done was accept what the OP stated in his first post without question, and told him that what he had was the rarest of rare mint errors, worth millions of dollars. So, from now on, that's what I'm going to do. Would that make you happy, Rascal?
Don't bother wasting your time Rick. Just about everyone has told the guy off already and none of it sinks in. He's just a total introvert who cannot see past the skin on his own eyes. It's quite sad really.
