i am currently using a cigar box to hold my coins and bills. i was looking for some more coin flips to hold my newly added coins. as i was looking for some on ebay i came across a page of coin holders that fits into a three ring binder. i was wondering what people use to hold their coins. thanks for your help.
yes, i am only using the 2 x 2's right now. but i need to get more of something to hold them and was wondering what people use. how do the airtites work?
I ordered some of those plastic pages of coin holders the other day and the ones I am getting are die cut and can be removed one at a time so you can store them in just about any kind of container. Mine cost $.50 per sheet of ten. I ordered ten sheets and shipping cost more than the sheets.
hmm. well for right now i think i will continue to use the inexspensive holders because i pretty much have inexspensive coins except for my new morgan dollar. but the problem i have ran into is finding a place to get the holders. i went to the local pawn shops and looked but they didnt have anything. ( i could spend all day looking at their coins) so i am turning to ebay and have found so many types of holders, and didnt know what was the best but relativly inexspensive.
I have bought supplies from Brooklyn Gallery listed in CoinAge magazine http://www.brooklyngallery.com/cgi-bin/commerce.exe?search=action&category=0134&keywords=all
Colonial Acres Coin in Kitchener, Ontario. Shipping to the U.S. may not be cost efficient for you. There must lots of coin supply places on your side of the river.
I've heard of certain metals reacting with wood, and I'm guessing a cigar box is made of wood. Unless they're already in holders I wouldn't store them in it. But right now I'm using 2x2 cardboard holders. Just ordered 100 of the most common sizes from jpscorner, that should last me for quite awhile. And the holders are in a shoebox, but I have seen pages for the holders and might get it in the future.
I've heard about wooden containers reacting with coins (varnished cherry usually), but cigar boxes are probably made of balsa (and not varnished).
Some of the older ones are made of different wood. Also some of the older cigar/ tobacco boxes I have has a very strong smell of tobacco when opened up. These boxes are about 50 years old, I'm not too sure if its a good idea to store coins in them with that kind of smell.
I use 2x2s in a 3 ring binder. I find it very nice and organized, unless I get a new coin to put in. I usually wait until I have 10 new coins then completely rearrange them. Gives me something to do.
Airtights are what I mainly use, but they are not completely "airtight" per say. If I still had my old bag sealer (with adjustable temp control) I would be simply sealing flips.....which would have been just as airtight (if done right) and cheaper too. I too agree that You should ditch the cigar box idea, they`re stinky, stodgy, and easily stolen. (should someone break in) If You have to keep em in there at least lock it in something. Even if it`s a small collection, it`s worth protecting.
also, keeping them in a binder is nice because you can ditch it in a pile of school stuff and BAM! Urban Camouflage!!
Cigar boxes are a bad idea, regardless of what they are made of. Many people use them to intentionally tone their coins. Problem is, you never know how that toning will turn out. Sheets with pockets are also often a bad idea because most of them contain PVC. If you buy or use them, make sure you only use those that are non PVC. It always amazes me when people say Air-Tites are too expensive. I just don't understand that. How can it not be worth 50 cents to buy one of the best coin holders there is, one that will protect your coin for as long as you live ? Even if your coin only cost you $5 is it not worth 50 cents to protect and properly store it for many years ? http://www.jpscorner.com/AirTite_Ring_Type_AirTite_Coin_Holders.htm
ok so i was going to get the sheets for the three ring binder so that they are out of the cigar box... why no pvc?
I can vouch for Jpscorner i also buy from Vernon Coin Center both thru the bay. I use Air-tite albums to store the Air-tites' those can get bit expensive especially for silver 40 mm coins since the H class holder only has 25 slots.
