65n1.. looks like great luster, but will hold true to my details grading + 1, and say the heavy nice on collar held it back to 66.

Dick is that a hit or a light reflection on the edge of his chin ?

    What does that mean?

    -------------------------------------------------------

    65 or 66, likely 66 RD

What about the 2 on the shoulder, the 6 lighter hits on the collar, the 3 on the cheek bone, the heavy one in the eyebrow, the 3 on the forehead, the 2 in the hair, and the half dozen or so in the fields ? And that's just on the obverse.

    66 ? I see a 64 at best.

But Doug we're talking tpg grades here not ANACs 6th Edition . Seems they care more about luster than hits .

Hey Rzage, I've heard that somewhere before. :)

I'm betting NGC said 67. A 66 would not surprise me though.

Mike heard it from you . :) Even with that great luster , the hits on the obverse and spot on the reverse 66 , with my luck it will go 67 .

The challenge with spots (and I've said this a few times, too) is that you never know when they showed up -- before or after grading. Red mint-state copper is so reactive that I think sometimes it spots if you look at it funny.

How important is luster when it comes to grading?

I couldn't give you a percentage , but great luster will forgive many hits on a coin .

Another question- What does great luster look like on a coin

    You almost have to have it in hand to see it, but these are as close as I can get to it;

  20. Leadfoot

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

From XF to Mint State, it is the single most important factor (according to the TPGs), IMO.

When rotated under a light, it's the "cartwheel effect" that appears. The videos above show this well.

In photos, it's often a bit more difficult, but can you see the difference between this:
