I can't agree with that 100% since I haven't collected a lot of series. I will say though, you don't see very many problem free VF-XF halves.

And this is what I am currently doing. Collecting in the F12-VF25 range. I think when I do complete it....and that will be a very long time from now...I would like to do a VG set in a Dansco similar to what you are doing. I really love the Barber series and the halves just really speak to me.

The 1909-O is a very tough 25c.

 

By the way, I know RB has a personal issue with plastic (which is OK ) I decided to throw some of my raw Barber Halves into the PCGS grading circus. Here is a synopsis.

[TD="colspan: 2"]Well, I have been collecting Barber halves in F-VF for a small amount of time now, and I figured it was time to put my grading to the test. Most of these coins are common, but I really enjoy this series, and I wanted to use this as a learning experience. I have few more raw sitting in my Dansco waiting for plastic tombs, but I figured 8 was enough for my first time submitting.

1) 1898-S Bought from a dealer at the Pitt ANA. The dealer warned me he felt it was a VG10 coin, and I trust his expertise. I just like the coin so much I wanted to take the shot at an F-12
2) 1899 Bought from another forum member. This is a strong F15 coin in my opinion.
3) 1902 Bought from the same forum member. A very crusty piece that should make F15 on it's worst day. I hope for a VF20.
4) 1903-S Again, from the same member. A lighter coin with good detail. I expect a VF20 grade but would not be surprised with a VF25 grade.
5) 1905-S Another raw purchase from the Pitt ANA. I feel this coin has a strong chance at an F15, but wouldn't be disappointed with an F12 grade.
6) 1908 A raw purchase from the Philly Whitman show this year. I think it has a good chance at VF20.
7) 1910-S Bought from the same forum member as mentioned above. This coin has all the best qualities in a F-VF Barber half. I would like a VF20, but I feel it's a strong F15.
8) 1913-D Bought from the same forum member above, I belive this coin should get a VF20, but wouldn't be surprised if it got a F15.

As always, grades are subjective, and I plan on absorbing as much as I can out of this experience. Of course if I get a body bag, it will go back in the Dansco as if it never took the tip to California in the first place. I will post the grades, as soon as I get them.[/TD]

IMO Slabs have their place. Most of my key dates are in slabs. I do love the look and feel of raw coins though.

 

Here are some of mine I got out of Scrap bins. Cant afford the pretty ones lol.

 

I love the feel of raw coins as well. That's why I buy duplicates if I like them and put them in my Dansco. I like to buy the better pieces I can find in the PCGS holders or put them in there. I am not the best at taking care of coins, and I would like to protect my "investment" as best I can. Slabs offer the best option in that scenario for me. I tend to favor PCGS and I'm still not really sure why. I think a pq coin in a PCGS slab offers the best situation for the persons that might someday inherit my collection. Just an opinion.

 

I have been working on a set of raw Barber halves for several years. They are in a Dansco album and I just need two more, 1892P and 1893S.
For the 1892-S and 1892-O I couldn't find raw coins so I had to buy slabbed. I probably will not crack them out.

 

I'm not sure if I posted this set here yet.

08-D, 12-S, and 13-S are my favorites.
