Knowing the popularity of the seller's auctions and the volatility of the barber halves for key dates...I could see some big snipes. Glad I'm not bidding.
I'm going to guess AU55 on that 1915S. It is a beauty but it looks like it saw a little bit of wear during its travels!
I cannot remember if I have already posted my only high grade Barber in this thread (sorry if I have!). I bought this Proof Barber from Goldberg Auctions in May. I got lucky in the auction and was able to buy this about $200 under the NGC/Numismedia price guide. I had new photographs made of this coin this Fall.
Thanks, I also cracked out a Barber Half PCGS AU53, as I looked at a bunch of halfs even sent some back to big time dealers till I found the right one. I'll check my files for a photo to post
RB... I am also down to ten needed to complete the set I started in Chicago at the ANA. I just picked this one up this evening ...
It seems its been a long time since I bought any new Barbers to share with you all. I think I more then made up for it with this one though. The pics do this coin no justice at all! It is nice and colorful with blazing luster showing though the toning. It is probably the nicest Barber I have ever owned
To both ElbeSaar and Log. I need to finish this set first! Although I've got to admit, of all the series I've collected this has been one of my favorites. These last 10 coins are mostly in the 1890's so they're a real challenge to find in fine, as you can see, I'm having to dip down into VG for some coins, which I don't mind if the coin has the right look. Interestingly enough, the coin dealer I bought that 1893 S from told me he believes Barbers in VF-XF are probably the most undervalued coins in US numismatics. There were just so few minted(particularly in the case of the half dollar), and so many of them circulated for so long that although you can easily find them in AG-G, they are really hard to find in those higher circulated grades. I've found that to be the case. I think it could take me years if I was dead set on all of them being in Fine. If I can even find the coin in that grade, most dealers have them priced at a premium(some times significantly above even Red Book) and really won't budge off their asking price. So it may take a while to chase down those last few in the grade/look that I like.
Race: I have to agree with the dealers, altho it kills me. Those higher grade Barbers are really tough. Especially the $1/2's. Now, try to find the quarters: 1896 O, 1897 O, S, and some other dates. Strange ones include the 1893 S, which took me until last year to upgrade to an AU, from a F-15. The 1905 O and 1907 S are also very tough. Not to mention the 1909 O, which is nearly impossible above F. I have many dups, which I guess I should sell soon.
