    hi all

I have searched forum and have seen references made about good online dealers even some that are suppose to be members of this forum, But no links or names...Maybe I'm just searching wrong.

Anyway I am a newbie and looking for Suggestions on who to buy from... I did see that Ebay isnt the best choice.. I was getting tempted to use Greatsoutherncoin on Ebay, they had Great looking pictures, but after researching them on the forum I see that they are of questionable ethics.

I am looking to complete a U.S. type set. I would imagine in xf - au

    Thanks

    Anthony

Anthony, just keep looking at posts and you will see a few dealers who's opinion is respected. I think people here don't name them since we know who they are and we don't want to be seen as preferential.

If you PM me I will give you the names of a few on this board I would be very comfortable recommending to you. I am sure most others who have been here more than 6 months would give you the same names.

I've bought a couple coins from here and was happy with the deals. I thought they grade accurately and provided good service. I know their XF Lincolns don't last long, you have to keep checking their site constantly to get the good ones.
BTW, I'm not associated in any way with them.http://www.empirecoins.net/shop/

There is a list of good coin sites/dealers in the resources section of this forum: http://www.cointalk.com/t14152/

eBay is not a bad choice, so long as you buy from people with good feedback and a reputation for selling coins. Someone can have great feedback, but if they are a first time coin seller then that feedback means little.

Quite a few people on this site sell on eBay and are also reputable in what they sell. Stick around. =)

I've used northeastcoin.com with good results and they have a layaway plan as well if you need that.. good prices, service and a nice selection.

I've no affiliation with this dealer what so ever...

Let's see - The Penny Lady, Lost Dutchman, raider, 900fine, Mark Feld, - they are all members. Haven't had coffee yet so I'm sure there's quite a few more that I can't think of off the top of my head.

Some do, some don't. But does it matter really ? Contact them, I'm quite sure it'll be pretty easy to get pics once they know what you want.

Feedback is worthless. It means absolutely nothing. Some of the worst scam artists that there have ever been on ebay have had great or even perfect feedback.

You would do well to remember that.

I seriously appreciate your replies and advice...and I don't want to be confrontational.

I can see how someone with a small sampling of feedback can artificially jack it up. But withas many sales as GSC has, how is it possible they get so many positive feedback responses. Less than .0015% have been unsatisfied. ****, if I gave a 20 dollar bill to people for $10 I would probably get that kind of feedback. What I am saying it is almost impossible to make everyone happy.

I understand some say there photos are “juiced”. If that is the case why not more negative feedbacks?

I guess my question is, how do they maintain such a high rating?

In my opinion, never trust the masses of Ebay to be the best judges of quality. As long as the coin looks similar to the photo, and they receive it in a timely manner, almost noone iwll give negative feedback. I agree with Doug about Ebay feedback ratings. Even myself, if there is something wrong with the coins, I work it out with the dealer. I never give negative feedback unless the dealer is unwillling to fix the problem if I point out a deficiency. Negative feedback really is the hallmark of outright thieves, not misrepresented goods.

There Good & Bad on or off ebay.
As of 9/2011 seller's can't leave bad feedback unless eBay tell you u can.
that not to fair to me as a seller but buyer can do as they please.

That would be all the more reason people would leave bad feedback as a buyer ..they dont have to worry about retaliation. Yet GSC avoids it.

Jello ...Whats your take on GSC

Simply put, it's because they sell to idiots. People who know absolutely nothing about coins.

I don't even know if he's still on ebay, probably is, but the guy who owned and operated SGS had the best ebay rating there was. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands of positive feedback ratings. And there were many, many more ebay sellers just like him.

Positive feedback on ebay is just like a post here on this forum. Unless you know the person making that post and have good reason to trust and respect what he has to say - should you pay attention to it ? How do you know he knows what he's talking about ?

It's the same thing with feedback. Do you know any of those people leaving that feedback ? No, you don't. So how do you know they know what they are talking about ? It's like walking up to a total stranger on the street and asking - hey, is this guy a good one to buy coins from ? Would you trust what the stranger had to say ?

That's why feedback is worthless. Worse than worthless even, it is downright harmful because it is so very, very, misleading.

LOL ... Yes, I was an active member of the Z06 forum ... and Like you say there were a lot of Knuckheads giving advice who barely knew where the ignition was.

As I believe your right, most people buying are probably idiots.. I still cant get around the fact that some have a clue what time it is.. There should still be more neg feedback if thier that bad...

Have you had any personal dealings with them? If not what do you base your opinions on? I have read a few stories of people that were not satisfied... But I don't know if they are also idiots. As I do not know them either.

I can see you are one of the key guys here ..So what you say carrys a lot of weight with me. I just like all the facts. Might have a touch of OCD

I buy from GSC all the time and have never had a bad experience. The reason I started buying from them were because I could rely on the picture quality. I always message them and ask if they would accept a lessor offer, and it usually works out to my advantage. The only thing I don't like is the crap email they send me about " under-valued coins" lol.

I little bit of OCD is not a bad thing for this hobby. =)

I get quite a bit of spam from sellers I've purchased from in the past. Not sure if they are allowed to do that, but some have been at it for years.

Pictures are probably the main issue with buying on eBay. Even if it's not a very accurate photo, a good description from a reputable seller goes a long way in sale prices. The odd thing is that some sellers get high prices despite using super bright, direct-flash exposure photos and no real specifics in the description. Basically the auction listings tell you nothing about how the coin looks in hand. I guess I'll chalk that one up to Doug's "Simply put, it's because they sell to idiots" bit.
