Tell us what coins you missed the boat on... Who can go back to the GSA days?
For me, it was the Ultra High Relief coins the mint made a few years back and the 25th Ann. set this past October.

I missed the boat by not participating with my dads collecting when I was younger. I cringe when I think how many silver coins I would have right now since silver was a couple of bucks then.

I realize it's not quite the same... but I missed the boat on a very pretty ring the other day on Craigslist. The seller said they were sapphires, but I was pretty sure they were Tanzanite. In any case, she decided to sell to someone else, because I live on a different island... and she didn't want to deal with Paypal.

It was 9 stones set in a filigree of 18k white gold...

For $225!!! *Banging head on wall.*

I assumed Tanzanite for the following reasons:

    1) She said her dad got the gems in Africa.
    2) They were purple/blue under the flash and almost sky-blue with indirect sunlight.

I didn't think they were worth a whole lot (due to the windows in the gems), but it was VERY nice in the one picture with flash... so I'm sure it was breath-taking in person. :(

Having the $ to buy some generic gold coins at decent prices in late 2008 and instead spending the money on mid to high grade U.S. silver & copper coins just so I can cross off more coins off my list.

Ugh. I remember seeing a nearly-complete 32-64 set of Washingtons come up on eBay, BIN at about 20% over melt. It was missing the 32-D and S, but nearly every coin in it was AU or BU -- including several of the harder 1930's dates.

I had been spending down a fairly hefty PayPal balance, left over from the days when I had sold a good bit on eBay and the PP money market had a significant yield. But I had reached the point where my balance was not quite high enough to cover this set, and when I tried to arrange another payment method, PP wanted me to jump through some obscure hoop.

I finally got things set up properly, went back to the item -- and someone had gotten it with a Make An Offer, right at melt.

There have been other painful misses, but that one really sticks in my mind.

Of course, there's also all the gold and silver that I didn't get when I was a beginning YN back in the early 70's. The fifty-cent-a-week allowance probably had more to do with that, though. :)

I've missed the boat once leaving Nantucket. Ended up having to wait 5 days for the next one because of the passing nor easter. Was living off grub bettles & horseshoe crabs for the time being.

I missed the boat not on a coin I aquired but one I returned. I was way to critical on it but had purchased it well under market value. Now I can't even touch that coin for less than 4 to 5 times what I paid for it. It was an 1802 Heraldic Eagle Reverse Dollar in a VG 6-8 grade. Shame on me!

Have missed the boat on many occasions. Got a nice piece in the early GSA sales, but missed out on the last sale in 1980, missed out on the plate money from the Nicobar. Auction in the 1970's missed out on an AU bust dollar for $110. Back in the early 70's could have picked up all the US gold coins I wanted for about three times face. Back when I started collecting I could have picked up MS conder tokens for $2 each, today they are $150 to $200 each. And there are others.

I had an older collector friend of mine offer a full set of lincolns for $600. He was trying to liquidate his holdings. I didn't have the cash at the time. The 09s vdb was really nice.

I *almost* missed the boat once. I received a small box full of old quarters. Got bored one day and started organizing them and found I had almost tossed a 1932-D. Luckily the book I used had a big asterisk (*) by that one from the previous owner so I paid a little closer attention. Turned out to be in poor shape so not super valuable, but still!!! :)

Yeah, the fractional gold Buffalos when the mint couldn't give them away, had their fire sale. Now look at them.

If you thought the US mint screwed up with the recent 25th Anniversary American Eagle set, that was nothing compared to the 1980 GSA sale.

I never found out about the toll free number that had to be called, so my mail order bid based on Nov. 1979 bid guidelines was no longer valid. Whole thing was a shambles and very disappointing to a teenage collector who just after a single coin.

So since I failed to get one that way, I tried to buy one at one coin shows that the Gold Coast Coin Club used to hold at the Hollywood Mall in Hollywood, Florida but at the time most dealers were cracking the coins out the GSA holders. So I never acquired a CC Morgan Dollar in a GSA holder.

Shortly after all this, I stopped collecting since college, work, raising kids, etc took over until a few years ago.

By the way, I did also miss out on the 25th Anniversary American Eagle set and was not collecting when the 20th Anniversary Eagle set was released.
