I found this with some other coins in a storage unit I bought.. ..My questions are-1.Is it real? and 2.how can you tell? It weighs about 13.5 grams and also has edge lettering that reads "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR" the words are seperated by stars and it also has other symbols both rectangular and circular. Thanks in advance for all of your replies.
Well, the weight is accurate for sure. Hard to tell though from just the pics. Try and look up authentic pictures of it or take it to a local dealer to be examined. From the looks of the pics you provided though, if it is real, looks like it was likely cleaned though.
Thanks for the quick reply rodeoclown,it has that silver "ring" to it when dropped also the exact weight is 13.49 according to a borrowed scale i figure that could be due to wear.I will be taking it to a dealer as soon as i go near one the closest to me is an hour and a half drive so i just want to see what you all have to say first before I make a special trip.--Dennis
Yeah, I'd say 13.49 is spot on for the weight still if you take into account any wear, etc. Good luck though, nice find if it's real, even if it might have been possibly improperly cleaned. If you don't mind, what's the other coins you found in the unit?
If its real, looks like someone put a little elbow grease in that brillo pad. You should definitely bring it to a dealer to be sure. Wish you the best!
I found quite a few, haven't had the chance to go through them all yet but there are some Morgans,Peace dollars and a lot of wheat pennys.I will post anything cool that i find as soon as i am done searching through them, also I aquired about 250lbs of wheat pennys over the weekend so hopefully I will have lots to share.
Thanks,I paid $150.for the unit, and I already sold a snow blower that was inside for $200 so I think I did good on this one. Also there are about 30 lbs of coins in this box that i am going through and all the other stuff that was in there. This should more than make up for the two units of junk I bought last time:smile maybe i will play the lotto this week!
I like your answer, but can explain how you can tell if it is real or fake? I am asking because I plan to sell it but I do not want to take any chances, also if it is real, any idea of what a fair asking price would be?
Hard to tell on price. Most in uncirculated condition I've seen go around $200-$600 or so range. Since this might be improperly cleaned, probably lower ball park but I bet you'd get someone to buy it for more than the actual unit cost.
It is pitted which indicates to me that it is not silver or is made of a very bad mix of metals. I would say it is questionable as to authenticity. This is just my opinion though. If it's real, congrats!
it's called aheraaldic eagle reverse 1801-1807 to bad it was cleaned. my oldest coin is 1852 large cent
I presume you meant so write "circulated condition", not "uncirculated condition". If it is genuine (and I can't tell for certain that it is) it has been harshly cleaned and is probably worth in the $150 range.
Believe me,your opinion is greatly appreciated! I know that usually it's a stupid move, but since it is in poor condition,I did an acid test and it is silver. But i guess that doesn't necessarily mean that it is real.--thanks again for the input
How would you explain the weight then? It's dead on at 13.5 (well, his was 13.49) grams which would be hard to pull off with other metals if it's the same exact size, etc.
Whatever you do DO NOT CLEAN YOUR COIN OR DO ANYTHING TO DAMAGE IT. Oh, well. I wish I could have given you that advice before you potentially ruined your coin.
