Hey Folks, Just another coin I believe is fake. It just looks too good. But since I know nothing about ancients, can you please give your opinion. The reverse looks to have 'reeding' near the edge.. Should that ever happen? These were struck with a hammer of some sort, weren't they? Please enlighten me.
Diameter, weight, and source are all extremely important in helping to determine authenticity. "Too nice" is never enough!
Fair enough. I agree 'too nice' isn't a legitimate factor in detecting counterfits. lol I do not have the coin in hand, therefore no diameter and weight. I guess I was wondering if there was something about the image that is screaming fake.
The only suspicious thing is the value - although not the rarest, this is a rather expensive coin and is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000. Who is selling it?
It was posted in the coin subreddit on reddit. There were no details give at all. Where it came from, etc... I did know the value was around 10k, thats also why I was suspicious. But back to the edge reeding, should that even be there? Here is the link for anyone who uses reddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/coins Also, I recently opened a subreddit calle coinsarecool: http://www.reddit.com/r/CoinsAreCool
I agree with everything Ardatirion posted. In the proper venue at a proper price I see nothing at all suspicious about this coin. Ancient greek is frequently found high grade, (and high priced, its why its labeled the hobby of kings). I also agree on the beaded border. There are large flan examples showing complete beading. This coin is just the right size that if the strike was perfect you would have not seen the beading at all. Since it is a touch low in the strike you see the upper beading. Not that Ardatirion needed any confirmation from me, just adding my 2 drachmas. Chris
