Thank You for taking the time out to read this. I have been wanting to get a flowing hair half for quite some time. It is my dream coin. It is not likely that I will be able to afford one above F-12 in the near future. On the other-hand I did not spend my entire coin budget on the last coin show, and can afford to purchase this one listed for $1,850, PCGS slabbed at VG-08. I absolutely love this coin, but am a bit nervous because this would be my largest purchase ever. Also, when I look up the PCGS values, I see a jump from G4 to F-12 in value. Could anyone give me a red-book value on this before I jump the gun? What are your overall impressions of the coin? If you were me would you wait a couple extra months, so you could buy an F-12 instead?

    Thank You Kindly,
    ~ Jason

I would wait for a bit better example Jason. I like it but the really weak reverse bothers me. Don't get me wrong, I do like it, but I think you would be happier with a little better example of this very cool coin. This is a big purchase and if you're not completely happy you should walk away from the deal. If you don't like it now you won't like it six months or a year from now. Hang tough and buy the one you'll never regret.

Thank you, For such a big purchase, I am going to go ahead and wait. I appreciate the advice. I saw a nicer reverse on a VG-8 at the last coinshow, but the price tag was quite a bit more.

I love this type coin ... and best of luck in your hunt!!

I bought this on in June (my only flowing hair coin) ... a bit weak on the date, but I just loved the toning (I do know that toning is not everyones cup of tea though)

Very nice flowing hair half. But as others have stated, if you can hold on for a little longer to get that f-12 model, you will be so much happier in the long run..~~

You'll be happier with a F-12 example of this great type coin, but my budget is also limited and I always buy the best coin that I can afford. Hard choice, but if you can wait and save I think you will be more proud of your purchase.

    What a beautiful coin Liberty.

  12. As much as I love a flowing hair coin, toning on such a circulated coin just does not seem attractive.

    2012 redbook says $1400 in vg-8

WAIT! I think That is a 3 leaves variety, redbook says 3,000 for vg-8

I don't think it is. Can't even see the leaves on the right side, and the ones on the left have a different design than the 3 leaves does.

JCB - checkout Heritage. Look at the coins in various grades to see what they actually sell for. You're going to see very wide differences even for coins of the same grade. Like $977 vs $2300 differences for a G6 coin, both sold the same day and both slabbed by PCGS.

This is not a coin that you just step up and buy one ! Not if you have any sense. Your best bet to obtain one of these is to get some help from a knowledgeable dealer and let them look at the coins in hand for you before purchase. Either as your agent, or buying direct from them.

Red book pricing for certified coins is not the way to go. As mentioned above go to Heritage and check prices realized in the holder and grade your interested in.

JCB, I agree with those who are advising you to hold out and wait for a better example in VG. The specimen does seem to lack reverse detail for a VG grade, at theprice you are considering (which is quite considerable).

The 1795 half dollar is a beautiful, historical coin. Worth spending the time to get one you are happy with.
Also, if possible familiarize yourself with the various Overton die varieties for this issue, this will give you a feeling for the issue, and also about the scarcity of the various varieties. If possible, chose a specimen with has the added bonus of being somewhat scarce - this would mean a rarity rating of 4.

For comparison, here are both my 1795's: one PCGS VG10, the other raw (VF20 or so).

It's still a nice coin but if it's your "dream coin" I'd wait and get one you really like as you will be holding it a very long time I think.
If you take your time looking at many coins you'll find the right one that you love and that the price is just right.
So IMO, save your $$ until your spending pile match's your want it bad enough pile lol

Despite its age, this is not an uncommon coin. I would preach patience, particularly with a coin on the upper end of the affordability scale.
